FACING TROUBLED TIMES AND A WALL OF WIND

by Paul Proctor
News with Views

Ignoring the danger won't make it go away

As many of you know, there is an enormous amount of potential calamity being announced online these days. I believe it's there because there's so little of it being revealed in the great puppet show we call the mainstream media. And, it's no secret the warnings that are published in the mainstream are often so contrived, controlled, convoluted, distorted and biased toward the puppeteer's global agenda, that it's become more of an indoctrination and disinformation campaign than a legitimate public service, making the internet one of the few remaining places to turn for raw data and honest communication.

"Climategate" is clearly the most recent and blatant example of exposed media malevolence. Funny, how it took hackers posting the private emails of so-called "scientists" to get the truth out. But, will it be enough to break the mainstream media spell that so many are under? I doubt it. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love truth and those who love lies. Liars wouldn't have an audience if everybody loved the truth.

The enumerable online warnings of woe have been around in varying degrees since the World Wide Web became popular, but have now reached such a shrill and saturated level that much of it has become intolerable. Don't get me wrong - those warnings are needed - very much so; and this writer has obviously been very much a part of that saturation. But, I'm afraid many of the voices crying in the wilderness of sin are now being lost in the white noise. Click here to continue ...

Manhattan Declaration: "Perhaps Millions" Being Led Toward New Age/New Spirituality

We are seeking to build a movement - hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Catholic, Evangelical, and Eastern Orthodox Christians who will stand together.-Manhattan Declaration

On November 20th, a document called the Manhattan Declaration was released at an event at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The Declaration has received wide media coverage, and as of this writing about ¼ million people have signed the document, with a current average of about 10 people a minute adding their names (around 14,400 a day).

One of the four drafters of the Declaration is Chuck Colson who also co-authored a document in the 90s called Evangelicals and Catholics Together. The ECT is similar in nature in that it identifies both Catholicism and Evangelicalism as part of the Christian church and asks members of both groups to unite in areas that they have in common. With this new document, the emphasis is on morality: gay versus traditional marriage, abortion, stem cell research, assisted suicide,  etc.

According to a Christianity Today article on the Manhattan Declaration, both prominent evangelical leaders and Catholic leaders are main signatories:

The declaration has received national attention because, in addition to many American evangelical leaders, its [main] signatories include nine Catholic archbishops, the president of the Catholic League, the primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, and the primate of the Orthodox Church in America.

Given the fact that a large number of the main 149 signatories have directly or indirectly promoted advocates of the New Age/New Spirituality (i.e., contemplative/emerging), it is not difficult to see that (even with good intentions) the Manhattan Declaration may provide an appealing and subtle avenue into the New Spirituality  for a vast number of signers, many of whom might not otherwise have had exposure to it given the conservative tendencies of most of the signers.  Evangelical Lutheran (ELCA) leader suggests Bible not the final authority

CHICAGO - The presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is suggesting that the Bible isn't the last word on homosexuality.

In a town hall meeting Sunday, Bishop Mark Hanson said, "the understanding we have of homosexuality today does not seem to be reflected at all in the context of the biblical writers." Therefore, he said, Lutherans should consider more modern views on sexual orientation.

At its churchwide convention in August, the ELCA lifted its ban on partnered gay and lesbian clergy, prompting some traditional congregations to withhold funds and begin forming a separate denomination.

But Hanson insisted the ELCA can accommodate both views. In his words, "God is still speaking to us."

He also suggests that more homosexual-friendly policies may help the denomination grow. Click here to continue reading.

MADISON, Wisc., Dec. 7 /Christian Newswire/ -Interfaith meetings continue at a great rate all over the world. Many religious leaders will descend at the UN Copenhagen Climate Conference this week. Plus, the Parliament of the World Religions is occurring at the same time in Melbourne, Australia.

The underlying desire of government leaders at the Copenhagen conference is to form a world government. A treaty will most likely not be signed at this current conference, however, Christians need to wake-up to the fact that eventually this could happen.

Despite questionable climate change research, religious leaders are using the Copenhagen meeting to further their cause of promoting an eventual world religion to go along with a world government.

According to USA Today, 100 "religiously affiliated representatives" from the USA will attend the Copenhagen summit according to Tyler Edgar, assistant director for the environmental arm of the National Council of Churches. Hundreds of religious leaders are projected to attend from different parts of the world.

Former National Association of Evangelicals vice president Richard Cizik will attend. He was forced to resign his NAE position. Rowan Williams and Desmond Tutu will be there. Williams is the leader of the Church of England and of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Tutu is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and South African minister.Click here to continue reading.

LTRP Note: Please refer to our posting (see above) about Bishop Mark Hanson of the ELCA, who is spoken of in this article as well. Also it is essential to read our article on the Manhattan Declaration in light of Bishop Hanson's hope (laid out below) to bring Evangelicals and Catholics together but reject those who take the Bible literally in terms of the end-times and Christ's return.

by Roger Oakland
Understand the Times

If you haven't already noticed, anti-Christian sentiment is growing toward those who believe in a biblical last days/Book of Revelation scenario prior to Christ's return. A 2005 article titled "Lutheran leader calls for an ecumenical council to address growing biblical fundamentalism" should help convince you. The article shows not only this growing resentment towards Bible-believing Christians but also the interspiritual path this change in attitude is taking:

The leader of the nation's largest Lutheran has called for a global Christian council to address an "identity crisis" on how churches interpret and understand the Bible. Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ... called for Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches to come together to combat a fundamentalist-millenialist-apocalypticist reading of Scripture.1

Hanson's request for a group to monitor and expose anti-ecumenists who take the Bible literally carries some weight! His message contains other statements showing his concern about Bible literalists-particularly those who take Bible prophecy seriously and see Israel and the Middle East crisis as an end-times sign post. The article continues:

[M]ainline churches traditionally are uneasy with literal readings of Scripture, particularly in fundamentalist churches, regarding the end of the world and political unrest in the Middle East. In addition, mainline churches have been divided over what the Bible says about hot-button issues such as homosexuality and women's ordination.2

Bishop Hanson believes that a global ecumenical group made up of Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, and Lutherans is the answer to the crisis he sees. Hanson calls this effort a "ministry of reconciliation," that will "result of Christ breaking down the dividing walls," and "reconcil[ing] the whole creation to God's self."3 But Hanson says that those who believe in a biblical end times and a literal Bible interpretation are counterproductive to and holding back the cause of Christ, which he suggests is to unite all of creation and produce a planetary utopia.

Incredibly, Hanson would like to reverse the outcome of the first reformation, join hands with the Catholic Church, and embrace the Eucharistic Jesus in order to bring about an ecumenical unity and the kingdom of God here on earth. He explains:

How do we as LWF [Lutheran World Federation] member churches continue to express our commitment to Eucharistic hospitality and sharing with the Roman Catholic Church without minimizing the theological issues that remain? Will 2017 and the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation provide an opportunity for shared reflection with the Roman Catholics on our contributions and commitment to the unity of Christ's church and to the work for justice and peace in all the earth.4

In this goal to bring about the kingdom of God on earth through an ecumenical, inter-faith movement, Reverend Munib Younan, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jerusalem, believes that those who adhere to an apocalyptic end-time scenario (with a focus on Israel) are spreading "heresy." He says they "pretend to love the Jewish people" but are "actually anti-Jewish" with teachings that are "racist." He has requested that Lutherans "alert all Christians everywhere to its dangers and false teachings."5

As I mentioned earlier in the book [Faith Undone], Rick Warren tells his followers that the details of Christ's return are none of our business. Tony Campolo says Christians that focus on end-time scenarios have been the cause of "extremely detrimental" consequences (see chapter 9). One thing you will notice in the writings of most emerging church leaders is an absence of discussion on a catastrophic apocalyptic atmosphere before Christ's literal return to earth. What you will see though is lots of discussion about establishing the kingdom now and never mind thinking about life after our earthly deaths. Brian McLaren gives an example:

The church has been preoccupied with the question, "What happens to your soul after you die?" As if the reason for Jesus coming can be summed up in, "Jesus is trying to help get more souls into heaven, as opposed to hell, after they die." I just think a fair reading of the Gospels blows that out of the water. I don't think that the entire message and life of Jesus can be boiled down to that bottom line.6

In an interview on Planet Preterist website, McLaren discusses his dilemma over eschatological-thinking believers:

I didn't start with any interest in rethinking eschatology ... I think many of us are in this kind of rethinking process-some starting from the beginning part by rethinking, perhaps, the relation of faith and science in relation to evolution and young-earth creationism ... some starting from the middle, as they re-examine what the gospel of the kingdom of God is supposed to mean, or the idea of integral or holistic mission ... and some starting from the end, re-examining eschatology....

Sometimes I think that people who are thoroughly indoctrinated and habituated into this kind of system will not be able to break free from it without experiencing both psychological and social dislocation and disorientation. (emphasis added)7

McLaren also says that such Christians are really going to hurt our world. He continues:

An eschatology of abandonment, which is how I would characterize certain streams of the left-behind approach, has disastrous social consequences.... Any project geared toward improving the world long term is seen as unfaithful, since we're supposed to assume that the world is getting worse and worse.8

In the interview, McLaren is asked what he thinks about a "preterist book"* that was being released. McLaren states:

A lot is at stake in these conversations-and very literally, the lives of thousands of people hang in the balance because if the dominant religious group in the country with the most weapons of mass destruction embraces an eschatology that legitimates escalating violence ... well, I hate to think about it.9

In essence, McLaren is saying if you believe the Book of Revelation and Matthew 24 are yet to take place, you are a dangerous psychological misfit and are assumed to have no compassion for the suffering, no concerns for the environment or the world in which we live, and have the potential to blow up the world with "weapons of mass destruction." If McLaren was talking about big governments and political parties, that would be one thing, but he is clear-he is referring to Christians who believe what the Bible says about the last days. (from Faith Undone, chapter 12, "A New Reformation")

Road to Rome: The New Evangelization Plan to Win Back "the Lost Brethren"

LTRP Note: The following article is posted partly in relation to our recent article about the Manhattan Declaration. This is an excerpt from Roger Oakland's book, Another Jesus: the eucharistic christ and the new evangelization, which uncovers the efforts by the Roman papacy to bring back the lost Protestant brethren. We also urge you to get a copy of A Lamp in the Dark from Adullam Films to better understand these efforts.

"The New Evangelization"
by Roger Oakland

Understand the Times

When Christians speak of evangelism, they are usually referring to efforts to fulfill the Great Commission. Just before ascending to heaven, Jesus commissioned every believer to proclaim the good news when He said: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).

This Gospel of Jesus Christ is very simple. It is a message that even a child can understand. It is about God's plan to save us from our sins. Since the fall of man, all have been born into this world separated from God our Creator by sin. About two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ, God's Son, supernaturally came to this earth, born of a virgin. While here on earth, Jesus lived a sinless life. He died upon the Cross at Calvary, and His blood was shed as a sacrifice for our sins. All those who will accept and believe in Jesus (that is, who Jesus is and what He has done) can enter into a relationship with Him, the Creator of the universe. This relationship will then last for eternity. This is the simple Gospel.

Unfortunately, Satan has always had an agenda to complicate the Gospel or confound people into believing in something less or something more than what the Gospel message teaches. Paul talked about "another gospel" when he was warning the Corinthians (II Corinthians 11:4) and the Galatians (Galatians 1:6) about the dangers of being deceived. Satan is a clever schemer. Deceiving people  in the name of the Savior is part of the devil's ultimate plan.

Not everything labeled the gospel is the true Gospel. Further, it follows that the term evangelization, if it is based on a counterfeit gospel, will seduce people into believing they are going to heaven, when instead they may be on their way to hell.

The New Evangelization [is] a program currently being promoted by the Catholic Church and designed to win the world to Christ-the Eucharistic Christ.

What is the New Evangelization?

While reading a book or an article, have you ever come across a term you have never seen before and suddenly your mind was illuminated? Just as if a light switch was turned on and a darkened room was lit, the significance of what you read became apparent. Such was the case for me when I came across the phrase the New Evangelization.

I was reading an article published by Zenit (The World Seen from Rome) that presented a news item based on statements made by Pope John Paul II. The article caught my attention because it was about an announcement the pope had made about the Eucharist. The article was titled "Why the Pope Would Write an Encyclical on the Eucharist: To Rekindle Amazement."1

While I was already aware the pope had declared the Eucharist to be the focal point for the Catholic Church's missionary vision at the Eucharistic Congress in June of 2000, the idea that the pope had written an Encyclical on the Eucharist to "Rekindle Amazement" in the Eucharist was new to me. I found the following statement made by the pope very enlightening:

[T]he Church will only be able to address the challenge of the new evangelization if she is able to contemplate, and enter into a profound relationship with Christ in the sacrament that makes his presence real.2

For me, this statement helped solve a puzzle that was now beginning to fall into place-this new evangelization program was directly linked to the Eucharistic Christ.

Further, the Zenit article gave more details on how the pope wanted to see this program develop:

I would like to rekindle this Eucharistic "amazement" by the present Encyclical Letter, in continuity with the Jubilee heritage which I have left to the Church in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte and its Marian crowning, Rosarium Virginis Mariae. To contemplate the face of Christ, and to contemplate it with Mary, is the programme which I have set before the Church at the dawn of the third millennium, summoning her to put out into the deep on the sea of history with the enthusiasm of the new evangelization.3

Making it clear that the new evangelization program would be tightly associated with the sacrament of the Eucharist, the pope concluded:

To contemplate Christ involves being able to recognize him wherever he manifests himself, in his many forms of presence, but above all in the living sacrament of his body and his blood. The Church draws her life from Christ in the Eucharist, by him she is fed and by him she is enlightened.4

The Facts about the New Evangelization
To find out more about this New Evangelization program, I decided to look for more information. It did not take long to find out there were many sources available confirming such a program existed. One article that was particularly helpful was found on the EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) web site. Under a heading "The New Evangelization: Building the Civilization of Love," I read:

As the Holy Father entrusts the Third Millennium to the Blessed Virgin Mary, EWTN inaugurates it's New Evangelization specialty site. This site will forever be a work in progress, as we continue to bring to you information about the Catholic Faith on the 5 continents. We hope that the information on the synods will be a help to those whose mission is to evangelize, a mission which belongs to all of us at least through prayer. The historical, statistical and devotional material should give every visitor a sense of the universality of the Church and its mission.5

Then one additional and very significant statement:

Under the protection of St. Therese of Lisieux, Patroness of the Missions, and Our Lady of Guadalupe, to whom the Pope has committed the New Evangelization, may the Spirit of God bring about the New Pentecost to which the Church looks forward with hope.6

This above statement may come as a surprise to Protestants who are enthusiastically joining hands with Catholics for the sake of evangelism. The Catholic program is committed to "Our Lady of Guadalupe." Furthermore, it would be good to check out what is meant by this "New Pentecost." Paul also warned the Corinthians about "another spirit" that was associated with "another gospel" and "another Jesus."

'Twilight': A Spiritually Confused Reminder For Christian Parents

 by Ted Baehr

"When you buy tickets to spiritually confused and biblically illiterate witchcraft and vampire movies, or nasty sex comedies, you are NOT drawing closer to God. You are pulling away. You do damage to the most important relationship in your life."

This past weekend, over 12 million people voted with their entertainment dollars to see "The Twilight Saga: New Moon." Several million were no doubt church-going teenagers and young adults.." Several million were no doubt church-going teenagers and young adults.

"New Moon" is a spiritually confused, dangerous work.

On the one hand, it metaphorically asks the question, "How can I overcome my sinful nature and save my soul?" Thus, the "good" vampires in the movie are constantly trying to overcome their lust for human blood, often succeeding but sometimes failing. On the other hand, the movie's heroine decides she wants to risk the possibility of losing her soul by becoming a vampire so that she can be with the vampire she loves.

Jesus Christ is very clear about the real spiritual dangers in this second message when He asks His disciples in Mark 8:36, "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?"

The average American citizen today, however (especially the nation's young people), is biblically illiterate. They do not take seriously the theological teachings of Jesus Christ and His apostles in the New Testament documents. Click here to read this entire article.

World AIDS Day - I Am Free From Homosexuality While Homosexual Activists Continue To Glorify The Sin That is Leading Cause of AIDS in U. S.

by James Hartline
The James Hartline Report

DECEMBER 1ST - Today is World AIDS Day - I have been fighting a twelve year battle with the AIDS virus, a disease that I acquired in my former life of promiscuity, drug abuse and homosexuality. For ten years now, I have been making my stand for the Lord Jesus Christ to declare to America that there is a way out of the destruction of homosexuality and its many diabolical consequences.

On this World AIDS Day, I announce once again, the power of God to heal, deliver and correct the soul bound up in sin and sickness. I am living proof that God's word is true and His power to transform the most wicked prisoner of sin is still available to all who will humble themselves and receive Jesus Christ as Messiah, Savior, Deliverer and Healer.

As the world is reminded of the millions of men, women, children and babies who have died of AIDS, gay activists will be using the December 1, 2009 World AIDS Day to glorify homosexuality and the gay lifestyle which is still, by a wide margin, the leading cause of HIV transmissions in the United States. The Center for Disease Control recently released a report that shows men who have sex with other men is the only group in America that shows a rise in the rate of HIV transmissions. Promiscuity, fueled by self-destructive lusts, perpetuates the catastrophic spread of AIDS in homosexual communities throughout America, Canada and Europe. In America, 46% of all black male homosexuals living in urban areas are infected with the AIDS virus. Often, without telling their wives or girlfriends, black men living on the "down low" will be engaging in secret risky homosexual behavior and become infected with HIV. They then spread the disease to their unsuspecting female partners. Click here to continue reading ...

Special Note From Lighthouse Trails
We believe God loves every single human being. We do not believe any person should be treated with hateful or cruel behavior.

The Responsibility of the Believer

We also believe the homosexual lifestyle is wrong and that God makes that very clear in His Word. It is our responsibility as Christians to speak the truth in love, understanding that sin separates us from God, but the moment someone repents and makes Jesus Christ his or her Lord, fellowship and relationship with God can take place.

As Christians, we cannot say to the world that homosexuality is acceptable, but we can say to the homosexual, we love you and care about you. We believe God, through Jesus Christ, can help you come out of the homosexual lifestyle, as He has promised to give strength when He is called upon. That does not mean you will never have a moment of weakness and perhaps even fall, but freedom and peace are always just that sincere prayer of repentance away.

The Responsibility of the Believer Who Struggles with Homosexuality

We have all sinned and fallen short of His glory, but we must always attempt to deny our fleshly lusts, renounce them and then trust His grace to help us. If you are a born-again believer who is struggling to find victory against the homosexual lifestyle, please do not give in to the pull that says, "It's ok to continue in that lifestyle and still consider yourself a practicing Christian." While anyone of us can cave in to temptations, we cannot minimize the importance of "putting on the full armour of God" that we might find victory. And then, by His grace and His strength, so walk. Our sin separates us from our Creator ... it is only through Jesus Christ that we can receive forgiveness, and that is a free gift. But we must "take up our cross and follow Him."

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13

Lutherans Splitting from ELCA Over Homosexual Ordinations

From Way of Life Ministries

(Friday Church News Notes, December 4, 2009, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The liberal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is splitting over the issue of the ordination of homosexuals. On November 18 a group of Lutherans called CORE (Coalition for Renewal) voted to form a new Lutheran denomination in response to the decision this summer by the ELCA to allow "openly practicing homosexuals" to serve as pastors ("Lutherans Splitting," Baptist Press, Nov. 25, 2009). It is not yet certain how many churches will join the new group, as it takes a two-thirds vote for a congregation to leave the ELCA. Some 1,200 supporters of CORE met in late September to show their support for the split. Click here for source.

Dominionism's Fatal Flaw

by Larry DeBruyn

The Depravity of Humanity, Including "Us."

Having laid claim to possessing political clout in America over the last few decades, religious conservatives might be wondering whether or not, in light of losses in the last election, they are watching their cause crashing and burning. In the April 12, 2009, edition, the cover story on Newsweek magazine boldly read, "The Decline and Fall of Christian America."[1] The Christian Science Monitor too speculated about, "The Coming Evangelical Collapse."[2] The drift toward socialism in Washington, D.C., has no doubt fueled concerns about whether or not America has sold its birthright for a mess of soup (See Genesis 25:32-34.).

Despite the involvement of the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition in America's political process over the last few decades-in 1976, a cover of Newsweek read, Born Again, and declared that year to be the year of the evangelical-the moral decline of this nation continues down that slippery slope. A woman's right to an abortion is still more important than a baby's life. Public opinion polls continue to determine whether a thing's right or wrong. The index of leading cultural indicators continues to decline. Financial scams have bilked thousands out of millions of their retirement and life savings. Unabated and uncensored, the entertainment establishment continues to vomit moral filth and vermin upon the culture. Because little has changed, many who have fought the good fight against national corruption are understandably discouraged. One leader has even informed his constituency that, "attempts to restore morality 'through the political process have failed'." Click here to continue reading.

Contemplative Spirituality: A belief system that uses ancient mystical practices to induce altered states of consciousness (the silence) and is rooted in mysticism and the occult but often wrapped in Christian terminology. The premise of contemplative spirituality is pantheistic (God is all) and panentheistic (God is in all). Common terms used for this movement are "spiritual formation," "the silence," "the stillness," "ancient-wisdom," "spiritual disciplines," and many others.

Spiritual Formation: A movement that has provided a platform and a channel through which contemplative prayer is entering the church. Find spiritual formation being used, and in nearly every case you will find contemplative spirituality. In fact, contemplative spirituality is the heartbeat of the spiritual formation movement.
