Assemblies of God General Superintendent requests name be removed from “Covenant for Civility”

by John Lanagan
My Word Like Fire Ministries

If any man will do his will, he shall know of his doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. (John 17:7)

In late March, the Covenant for Civility was made public with great fanfare. Spearheaded by progressive Jim Wallis, the document featured the signatures of 114 leading members of the religious community.

According to CNN, those who signed are “from a broad swath of Christian Traditions, including the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the head of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, and the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, a major Pentecostal organization.”

The covenant calls for an end to bitter debate and rancor, and urges kindness and respect when dealing with one another.

However, the covenant now has a prominent defector, with others certain to follow. Dr. George O. Wood, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, has asked that his signature be removed from the agreement.

In his email to me, Superintendent Wood has stated, “I have put in a request to NAE (National Association of Evangelicals) for my name to be withdrawn as a signatory. They are working on it and will let me know if it can happen and how. Like you, I do not want my name or the Assemblies of God to be associated with persons who claim to be in the Body of Christ yet reject the moral teachings of Scripture.” (Bold mine)

Although the covenant addresses the “unity we have in the Body of Christ,” many of the signatories oppose the Biblical Christ. The best known of these is probably Brian McLaren. Amazing Quotes You Shouldn't Forget About

Today there really aren't that many Fundamentalists left; I don't know if you know that or not, but they are such a minority; there aren't that many Fundamentalists left in America ... Now the word 'fundamentalist' actually comes from a document in the 1920s called the Five Fundamentals of the Faith. And it is a very legalistic, narrow view of Christianity." Quote by Rick Warren, May 2005

[Fundamentalism is]"one of the big enemies of the 21st century." "Muslim fundamentalism, Christian fundamentalism, Jewish fundamentalism, secular fundamentalism - they're all motivated by fear. Fear of each other." - Rick Warren, January 2006

"Christianity IS an eastern religion. It has all its roots in the East! It's a bit baffling to me that people lose sight of this, and insist on creating a false separation [see note below] between eastern religions and (apparently) western Christianity." Mark Oestreicher, Youth Specialties

"Emergent doesn't have a position on absolute truth, or on anything for that matter. Do you show up at a dinner party with your neighbors and ask, 'What's this dinner party's position on absolute truth?' No, you don't, because it's a nonsensical question." Tony Jones at the 2005 National Youth Workers Convention

"My goal is to destroy Christianity as a world religion and be a recatalyst for the movement of Jesus Christ," McManus, author of a new book called The Barbarian Way, said in a telephone interview. "Some people are upset with me because it sounds like I'm anti-Christian. I think they might be right."—Erwin McManus, from The Barbarian Way

"With practice, you can develop the habit of praying silent 'breath prayers'" Rick Warren, from his book (p. 299)

"[U]se 'breath prayers' throughout the day, as many Christians have done for centuries. You choose a brief sentence or a simple phrase that can be repeated to Jesus in one breath."—Rick Warren,  The Purpose-Driven Life, p. 89

"Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God's house, all human beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person claim his or her own way to God." Henri Nouwen, Sabbatical Journey

"Isn't it a pity that people are going into LSD to have spiritual experiences, when we have a tradition in the Church [contemplative prayer] which no one knows anything about?"source Thomas Merton

"My acquaintance with eastern methods of meditation has convinced me that … there are ways of calming the mind in the spiritual disciplines of both the east and the west [and] many serious seekers of truth study the eastern religions,…"

Emergent: Why Can't We All Be Right?

by Bob DeWaay

Emergent writers decry any approach that declares some ideas to be true and others false. Propositions force people to decide what to believe. One Emergent writer, Dwight J. Friesen, explains his view: “The theological method of orthoparadoxy surrenders the right to be right for the sake of movement toward being reconciled one with the other, while simultaneously seeking to bring the fullness of convictions and beliefs to the other. Current theological methods that often stress agreement/disagreement, win/loss, good/bad, orthodoxy/heresy, and the like set people up for constant battles to convince and convert the other to their way of believing and being in the world.”1 Propositional truth claims do not fit into the Emergent “conversation” because they divide people. But the price of giving up such claims is to give up the very claims that the Biblical writers made.

Getting back to Paul’s address before Festus and Agrippa, his words indeed got Agrippa’s attention:

King Agrippa, do you believe the Prophets? I know that you do.” And Agrippa replied to Paul, “In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian.” And Paul said, “I would to God, that whether in a short or long time, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these chains. (Acts 26:27-29)

Paul believed that truth claims such as the bodily resurrection of Christ (Acts 26:23) were to be proclaimed even before kings who had the power over Paul’s life. His was not a conversation with those who were just as likely to be right as Paul was, but a bold proclamation of the truth designed to convince others of the truth.

But the very practice of the New Testament apostles is what most Emergent leaders decry: claiming to be right about matters and anathematizing those who are in error. For example, Friesen says, “Here is my working maxim of a theology of orthoparadoxy: the more irreconcilable various theological positions appear to be, the closer we are to experiencing truth.”2 Take careful note that he says “experiencing truth” (the neo-orthodox idea) not “knowing truth.” Compare that to Paul’s assessment of the Judaizers in Galatia: “As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:9).

Furthermore, Paul urged others to follow his example and charged elders with the duty of correcting false teaching: “[The elder should be] holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict” (Titus 1:9). Contrast Paul’s instructions to Christian elders with the ideas of emergent writer Samir Selmanovic: “We have created a false tension between keeping our Christian identity intact and approaching the world in humility. Humility is to be our identity. When we open ourselves to be taught by ‘the other,’ we don’t become less the followers of Christ but more so.”3 According to Paul we are to guard the flock against “the other” (i.e., religious beliefs that are not in accord with the faith once for all delivered to the saints) and in the Emergent view “the other” teaches us. Humility is not openness to false religions and false teachings; it is the realization that we are sinners who need a savior.

The real false tension is the one Emergent thinking creates between humility and confidence in the once-for-all revealed truth. Moses was called “humble” (Numbers 12:3) and to him was given the revelation of God’s truth. Humble Moses told the Israelites not to listen to anyone who came in the name of a god they had not known—even if they produced signs (Deuteronomy 13:1-4). The idea that God’s people would listen to false teachings as a sign of their humility is antithetical to what we are told in the Bible. (from Bob DeWaay’s book, The Emergent Church)

Max Lucado Joins "Covenant for Civility"

by John Lanagan
My Word Like Fire Ministries

Well known author Max Lucado has placed his name on the Covenant for Civility. Who, after all, can argue against such a document, which calls for an end to mean-spirited debate and rancor?

Had this truly been a secular document, there would be no problem. Unfortunately, this document is presented in spiritual terms. It begins with Psalm 133:1: “How good and pleasant it is when the people of God live together in unity.”
The document then states, “As Christian pastors and leaders…”

The Covenant for Civility also refers to “the unity we have in the Body of Christ.”

Incredibly, the agreement also includes a pledge there be “no questioning of the other’s faith…”

Yet Brian McLaren, who rejects the Biblical Christ, is one of the signatories. There are others who reject Jesus Christ, yet have been included.

How do we join in this spiritual agreement when Christ tells us, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)  Click here to continue reading this article.

Holocaust Remembrance 2010

LTRP Note: This month is Holocaust Remembrance 2010. The following is an excerpt from Lighthouse Trails author, Anita Dittman’s war memoir, Trapped in Hitler’s Hell. Anita was a young Christian Jewish girl in Germany when Hitler’s terror against the Jews began. Today, at 83 years old, Anita still shares her story with others in her home state of Minnesota.

Trapped in Hitler’s Hell
Chapter 5 – “Open Up”

It was hard to get my strength back even though I was living at home again. Food rations decreased almost weekly, until we ate only one meal a day. Everyone had to tighten his belt because so much food was being sent to the German soldiers on the front lines.

Brown-shirted storm troopers were marching through the towns, terrorizing everyone and delighting in making life miserable for the Jews, whether by teasing and taunting or by acts of brutality. They ridiculed and beat Jews everywhere and randomly hauled off individuals or families to prison. Cattle cars were filled daily as trainloads of frightened Jews were shipped to secret destinations throughout the tranquil German countryside.

Pastor Hornig said that some anonymous church member had paid for all my classes and books at the Konig Wilhelm Gymnasium* in Breslau. However, Mother and I were sure that it was the Hornigs themselves who had made the financial sacrifice. The tension was thick both at school and at home, for my three aunts bickered endlessly with one another.

As I walked to the gymnasium, I saw bold signs proclaiming “No Jews Allowed” on nearly every store. Other signs warned Germans to stay away from Jews, who had been banned from theaters, parks, and all recreational areas. Everywhere I looked, I saw anti-Jewish slogans and posters. Many of the posters had the photograph of a Jew who had just been arrested for some concocted crime. In sharp contrast, flashing neon signs illuminated Hitler’s picture.

The Nazi flag was hung proudly outside of most homes in Breslau. Inside, Germans were required to have a picture of the Führer somewhere in the house. Hitler was pressing the Christian pastors to have his picture placed at the front of church altars.
With so many German men on the battlefield, the women had taken over their jobs. The streets were strangely empty of most automobiles, for they all were being used for military purposes. As a result, streetcars were as packed as the railroad cars to concentration camps.

Hitler’s contorted and strained voice blasted hate propaganda from the radio almost daily; he frantically blamed “international financial Jewry“ for the war and warned Germans that every living Jew was an archenemy of the Reich. Jews had absolutely no rights and weren’t entitled to own property.

More and more Jews trembled behind locked doors. We learned that a brother and a sister of Mother’s had been picked up and taken to a camp. Another brother and his wife took their own lives rather than face a concentration camp ordeal. It was inevitable that the random confiscation of Jews should hit our house that winter.

Mother tried to be a peacemaker for her three quarreling sisters. However, when she attempted to help them, they would gang up on her because of her growing love for Jesus, who Pastor Hornig had told her was the Jewish Messiah. Mother could no longer deny the power of Christ in our lives. She had to talk about Him; it was a natural overflow of love. But her sisters insisted that it was Jesus’ followers who had hounded the Jews since the first century. They claimed the Nazis were all Christians on the basis of them being Gentiles and having attended Catholic or Lutheran churches. Many of those very churches had now sold out to the Führer, allowing his picture to be on their church altars. It made no sense to my aunts to worship Jesus, a phony dead man in whose name millions of Jews had been persecuted, tortured, and killed.

“But those people aren’t really Christians!” I insisted, not fully grasping the accuracy of my statement. “They just give real Christians a bad name.”

“Nonsense!” insisted Aunt Elsbeth. “All Gentiles are Christians.”

They either couldn’t or wouldn’t understand. Nor would they believe Pastor Hornig when he told us that numerous Christians all over Europe were actually helping the Jews at the risk of their own lives. Ultimately, many of the believers went into concentration camps themselves just because they had aided a Jew somewhere in the Nazi world.

“You and your mother are traitors to our people!” Aunt Friede said at least once a day. “You should be ashamed of yourselves.” Finally Mother would be quiet, but every night her sisters saw her open her New Testament and read some more. They paced and muttered to themselves about the tragedy of their sister’s “blindness.”

Since we shared the kitchen with so many others, we usually ate at about 9:00 P.M. As we sat down to our meal one night early that spring, we heard an abrupt knock on our door. Then came the familiar “Open up!” that we had heard several times in our building. Two more forceful knocks followed.

Mother went to the door, resigned to opening it and facing the Nazis. She looked into the cold eyes of two Gestapo agents, who greeted her with the familiar “Heil Hitler!”

Mother didn’t respond, but she opened the door to let them in. My aunts and I sat frozen in our chairs as the two Gestapo men marched in, proudly wearing their Nazi uniforms and swastikas.

“We are here to arrest Käte Suessman. Which one of you is she?”

“It is I,” Aunt Käte replied. “What have I done?” Relief and horror were written on Mother’s face. At least they didn’t want me or her other two sisters, who were in poor health.

“Does it matter what the reason is for a Jew’s arrest?” the self-appointed Gestapo spokesman answered. “Jews need only exist; that is reason enough for their arrest. You have five minutes to fill one bag with things and that is all. Hurry now.” To read this entire chapter, click here.

THE 2010 CENSUS AND REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH – Something to Think About

by Betty Freauf
Newswithviews.com

The deadline for sending in the 2010 Census form has passed and now thousands of part-time census workers will come to homes that didn’t complete the form or completed it inaccurately. Rush Limbaugh on April 2, 2010 said he’d been getting e-mails from Republicans who had not received their form. A caller to his radio program was a Republican and he said he hadn’t received a form. Would it be paranoid for us to believe that perhaps many Republicans purposely didn’t get the form and therefore their state would be short-changed on federal revenue sharing and representation in Congress? A 3/31/2010 USA Today said about 1.6 million more forms needed for the dwellings that were missed – some because people only have post office boxes. Many of us remember how a Census worker in 2009 came to our homes with a trusty little GPS in hand. The incidences of government surveillance are becoming unnerving for innocent people.

The New World Order crowd revises the history books and relies on us having short memories so how many remember the 1970 Census form for instance? The 1970 census takers demanded from all homeowners, apartment owners, and owners of single resident houses used as rentals the size of each house and apartment. The reason for compiling this information was to locate and record the square feet in each of these structures. This was a step towards redistributing the wealth and this inventory would tell them how much exists and exactly where it is located.

WorldNetDaily had an exclusive commentary by Neal Boortz about a game called SCRAMBLE FOR WEALTH AND POWER which is an exercise designed in the government schools to show the children how wealth and power is “distributed” in our society. Is it any wonder young people think that the Obama Health Care plan is great even though they have no idea what the restrictions and long-range consequences might eventually be?

In Robert J. Ringer’s 1979 book RESTORING THE AMERICAN DREAM he mentioned there were approximately 1,000 government programs which were redistributing the wealth as opposed to about 100 in 1960. It meant that more than 60 millions Americans already at that time were receiving regular government checks of some kind. A greater portion of those were created under our “Great Society” President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s “compassionate policy” of universal health care in 1965 with the creation of Medicare and Medicaid. Of course, the creation of full-time government jobs is another subtle method of redistribution of the wealth with exorbitant pensions and other perks.

In checking the 2000 Census I find we were asked how many bedrooms we would list if the house, apartment or mobile home were put on the market for sale or rent? They asked where we had COMPLETE plumbing facilities in the house, apartment or mobile home? They asked did we have hot and cold piped water, a flush toilet and a bathtub or shower? Did the facility have COMPLETE kitchen facilities – that is a sink with piped water, a range or stove and a refrigerator? They wanted to know if we had telephone service and which FUEL was used MOST for heating? All capitalized words were also capitalized on the questionnaire.

Then the Census asked us about our automobiles, vans and trucks of one-ton capacity or less which are kept at the home for use by members of the household. And then questions were asked of owners of ONE-FAMILY HOUSE OR MOBILE HOME:

Is there a business (such as a store or barber shop) or a medical office on this property? How many acres is this house or mobile home on? Then they asked what were the actual sales of all agricultural products from this property in 1999 and what were the annual costs of utilities and fuels for this house, apartment or mobile home. Then there were questions about how much was paid for rent or the monthly mortgage payment and was there a second mortgage and how much were the real estate taxes and the cost of the annual payments for fire, hazard and flood insurance on this property? They wanted to know what the owner thought the property was worth. Leaving no rock unturned, then they asked nosey questions about condominiums. Click here to continue reading.
