Misleading Pastors into Contemplative Prayer

Over 400,000 pastors and leaders have joined Rick Warren's online "ministry" at www.pastors.com. What exactly is he promoting and teaching these Christian pastors? And is your pastor one of them?

Note: In 2008, the pastors.com website was shut down and a new site replaced it. Thus, the links to pastors.com that Lighthouse Trails has posted for documentation have been removed. However, we have been able to provide cached files to many of these now broken links.

"The goal of solitude is not so much to unplug from my crazy world, as it is to change frequencies so that I can hear the Father. Richard Foster has said, 'Solitude doesn't give us the power to win the rat race, but to ignore it altogether.'"—Saddleback pastor, Lance Witt:

Contemplative Spirituality: A belief system that uses ancient mystical practices to induce altered states of consciousness (the silence) and is rooted in mysticism and the occult but often wrapped in Christian terminology. The premise of contemplative spirituality is pantheistic (God is all) and panentheistic (God is in all). Common terms used for this movement are "spiritual formation," "the silence," "the stillness," "ancient-wisdom," "spiritual disciplines," and many others.

Spiritual Formation: A movement that has provided a platform and a channel through which contemplative prayer is entering the church. Find spiritual formation being used, and in nearly every case you will find contemplative spirituality. In fact, contemplative spirituality is the heartbeat of the spiritual formation movement.
