Youth Conference and Contemplative Prayer |
 |
Rick
Warren has endorsed the works of contemplatives
such as Henri
Nouwen, Richard
Foster and Brennan
Manning for some time. But now he is heading
further down the
contemplative path and taking the youth of
America with him through his new Purpose Driven
Youth Conference 2005. Speakers for the conference
include Tic
Long, events coordinator for the very contemplative
Youth
Specialties and Rick Lawrence of Group Magazine,
a pro- contemplative magazine. It will be very
interesting to see what workshops the conference
will offer ... will they be holding contemplative
prayer sessions and offering labyrinths
as does Youth Specialties?

Legitimate
Religion or a Seducing Oxymoron
Article by Alexandra Alter of Miami Herald
Excerpt: "[A]s Buddhism becomes increasingly popular
in the United States -- outpacing Episcopalianism
with as many as four million members -- a growing
number of Christians are exploring Buddhist practices
while remaining within their own tradition.
Christian-Buddhist meditation groups, retreat
centers, books and websites attest to the growth
of the trend." read

Today and Lectio Divina |
 |
Christianity
Today is just
one of many Christian ministries enlisting in
the contemplative
spirituality movement. In the Fall 2004 issue
of Christian Parenting Today, a CT offshoot, an
article entitled Listening for God by Carla
Barnhill explains "how an ancient method of
prayer can deepen your teenager's faith."
The article is actually an interview with contemplative
advocate Tony
Jones who tells readers how to practice lectio
divina, a prayer method that often entails repeating
a
word or phrase from Scripture over and over.

Alerting Believers to Dangers
in Their Midst.
Philip Yancey, editor of Christianity Today,
said he was surprised at what he had gotten away
with in the evangelical church. Aside from interviewing
with pro-gay "Christian" leaders, what
else is he getting away with these days?

With
practice, you can develop the habit of praying
silent "breath prayers." Rick
Warren
When it gets to particular matters of policy,
like ordaining gay and lesbian ministers, I'm
confused. Philip
Yancey, 2004
I
began practicing meditation, specifically breath
prayer, once again. I integrated the use of Tai
Chi and yoga. - John
Michael Talbot
Today
I personally believe that while Jesus came to
open the door to God's house, all human beings
can walk through that door, whether they know
about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call
to help every person claim his or her own way
to God. - Henri
Nouwen

Youth
Specialties Promotes Eastern/New Age Prayer Practices
|

Youth
Specialties, host of the National
Pastor's Convention and the National Youth
Worker's Convention continues full steam ahead
into contemplative spirituality.
The
organization, founded by the late Mike Yaconelli,
is an influential voice in evangelical circles,
teaching pastors, youth pastors and many others
every year. Last year they formed a partnership
with Zondervan Publishing. They also publish the
Youth Worker's Journal, a magazine designed for
those who work with youth.
It is no secret that their conventions have workshops
and sessions on
contemplative prayer, going into the silence,
labyrinths
and more. Now, in their October/November issue
of Youth Worker, they boldly promote mantra-meditation
through Tao (a pagan belief system) breath
prayers and other forms of going into an
altered state of consciousness.
The fact that Youth Specialties is influencing
such a wide spectrum of the present-day Christian
community, while promoting Eastern style meditation
practices, seems to go unnoticed. Featured speakers
at the YS conventions represent some of the largest
churches in the country - Bill Hybel's Willow
Creek, Rick Warren's Saddleback, Leith Andersen's
Wooddale Church and many, many more.
