I was saved two years after my first child was born and when my son was one year old, I wanted to dress him up and take him out trick or treating. My older sister, who was at that time a Christian, strongly discouraged me from doing it. I am glad I agreed, because now I think of what effect it would have had on such a young child to see all of the ghoulish visages and costumes out there! Children cannot distinguish between what is real and what isn’t when they are that young. I was saved the following year and so never let my children (I have two sons) participate in Hallowe’en nor did I ever open my door to trick or treaters. I still don’t now that my children are adults and gone. I watched an excellent documentary on Hallowe’en which is narrated by Caryl Mastriciani, in the 1990’s. It is a time when death, demonism, and satan worship is glorified. What believer has any business participating in such an event? The Bible tells us, “All who hate me, love death”. And, “What fellowship has light with darkness and what concord has Christ with Belial?” The occult and demonic realm is no joke. “Biblical Demonology” by Merrill Unger is an excellent and sobering resource. While we understand that Satan is under divine restraint, we are not told exactly where those boundaries fall, in Scripture. It behooves us to heed the warnings in the Bible. I am glad I never participated in this holiday all the years since I was saved.

  2. John, You say “evil spirits don’t latch onto them on their rounds, I can guarantee that.”

No disrespect, but HOW can you know and guarantee that? Unless you yourself control the forces of evil! That’s a very irresponsible claim to make since there is no way to prove it and since you could be wrong in some cases.

Since the Harry Potter series have been used as school curriculum in the US, the children have developed a taste for Darkness, witchcraft and all that goes with it. Halloween is no longer an “innocent” holiday…Many children who go trick or treating are actually cursing and trying to cast spells on the people giving out candy…there may still be a few who dress up as innocent characters, but Christian parents need to educate themselves on this and be wise in this evil time! We are called to AVOID even the appearance of evil. Maranatha! Linn

When our daughter was little we participated in church “Harvest Parties.” Most of them were benign and light-hearted. But as time went on we saw children dressing in scary and inappropriate costumes so we stopped that. We haven’t participated in handing out candy for many years and, at times, I’ve felt conflicted. On one hand I was concerned that we looked like the “stingy, unloving Christian home.” On the other hand, I didn’t want creepy costumes coming to my door and participating in something I knew wasn’t harmless. I’ve thought about giving out tracts (w/candy), but others who have done that have seen them strewn all over the neighborhood (plus I question whether it’s appropriate to give them to children/minors without their parent’s permission–I wouldn’t want someone to do that to my children). I dread this “holiday” every year and all the trimmings that come with it in the stores. 🙁

The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction” Gal

Job 21:11 — They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. 12 They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

These two verses taken a bit out of context, but one would be wise to head this article.

  6. We are not saying it is wrong to use Halloween as an occasion to witness by handing out tracts and sharing Christ’s love with children. You are missing the point of the booklet. The booklet is to help parents understand the roots of Halloween with the hope they will not have their children participate in the event.

I believe it’s wise not to look for the devil in everything; he is simply not omnipresent, omnipotent, or omniscient. It’s good to warn, sure, but there’s no need to sensationalize or to go over the top. The majority (by far) of kids do this Halloween stuff for fun, do their rounds, and go home; case closed. Evil spirits don’t latch onto them on their rounds; I can guarantee that. Do both, give candy and the gospel. Be wise.
