Jimmy Carter Calls for Dividing Israel Before the Inauguration

[In a] New York Times editorial, in which Jimmy Carter publicly called for President Obama to divide the land of Israel at the United Nations before Inauguration Day.

During his presidency, Carter went to great lengths to obtain peace between Egypt and Israel, and since that time, the former President has remained an ardent advocate in support of a Palestinian state. With the recent election of Donald Trump as Obama’s successor, Carter knows that his vision and hopes for the future of “a two-state solution” to finally bring lasting peace to the Middle East is lessening by the moment.

In an impassioned and urgent attempt to use the time left in Obama’s term to salvage what he can of this situation, Carter called for Obama to take specific steps toward this aim at a peaceful resolution. One step specifically, among many mentioned, is Carter’s opinion that Obama should give formal recognition to a Palestinian state. In the editorial he explains that, “I am convinced the United States can still have the future of the Israel-Palestinian conflict before a change in presidents, but time is very short.”  Click here to continue reading.
