LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors have dropped efforts to keep a sexually abusive former priest from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles locked up indefinitely in a mental hospital, a district attorney spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Prosecutors informed the court at a hearing Friday that they would not pursue a petition to have former priest Michael Baker designated a sexually violent predator, said Los Angeles County district attorney spokesman Sandi Gibbons.
The former priest, now 63, pleaded guilty in 2007 to 12 felony counts of oral copulation with a person under the age of 18 for abusing two boys he met at parishes in Pico Rivera and Los Angeles.
He was to be released on Aug. 23 when prosecutors stepped in and attempted to block his parole. Click here to continue reading.
