Walking in God’s Strength Through It All
By Warren B. Smith
Throughout the Bible, we are told to rely on God’s strength and not our own. And throughout life—especially in times of trouble—the Bible makes it clear that God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). God tells the apostle Paul that His grace is sufficient in all circumstances because He will provide His strength in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). And with obvious irony, Paul makes the point that even if God had any weakness—which He doesn’t—that weakness would be stronger than the strongest strength of men (1 Corinthians 1:25). The bottom line is that to get through this life in a manner that is pleasing and glorifying to God, we need to solely rely on God’s powerful and perfect strength. It’s in that strength that we will be able to stand, even in the darkest days.
We rest on thee, our Shield and our Defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
strong in thy strength, safe in thy keeping tender,
we rest on thee, and in thy name we go.
—Edith G. Cherry (1872-1897)
Jesus Loves Me
Many of us first heard about God’s strength in the lyrics of the children’s song Jesus Loves Me. It was written in 1860 by Anna B. Warner:
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak, but He is strong.
Be Strong in the Lord
The apostle Paul exhorted the Ephesians to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might so they could stand against the wiles of the Devil.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10-11)
Not Our Own Strength
We are often reminded that our own strength is futile in the ongoing spiritual battle. We need God’s strength; It is He who must win the battle.
My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)
God Our Strength
God’s strength is also the main theme of Fanny Crosby’s 1882 hymn, God Our Strength, Enthroned Above:
God of our strength, enthroned above, the source of life, the fount of love, O let devotion’s sacred flame our souls awake to praise thy name. God of our strength, we wait on thee, our sure defense forever be.
When we come to recognize our weakness, we learn to call upon God to perfect His strength in that weakness. His grace is sufficient for us, and the fact that His strength is available to us is echoed throughout the Bible. The following Scriptures declare the grace and power of our strong and mighty God and our continual need for His victorious strength in our daily lives. May we let these Scriptures change us so that we truly walk in the strength of the Lord.

After ‘bumping’ a round several churches…i.e. word faith, methodist, assembly of God, Wesleyan…im seeing how important reading and absorbing Scriptures is. Reading scripture or hearing scripture read from the pulpit isn’t enough. It’s like eating a handful of food once a week!
Not enough! To be properly fed and nourished, you need good healthy food daily. That includes reading your Bible! Daily..on your own time. Thinking about what you’ve just read. Thanking Him for His Word!
