During his state visit to Israel, President Barack Obama made some powerful statements about Israel’s right to exist, but he cancelled those with his statements about the “right” of a Palestinian state. Speaking to students at the Jerusalem Convention Center on March 21, Obama said, “But make no mistake: those who adhere to the ideology of rejecting Israel’s right to exist might as well reject the earth beneath them and the sky above, because Israel is not going anywhere. Today, I want to tell you–particularly the young people–that so long as there is a United States of America, Ah-tem lo lah-vahd. You are not alone.”
Those bold-sounding words were nullified by the following statement in the same speech: “The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and justice must also be recognized. … Just as Israelis built a state in their homeland, Palestinians have a right to be a free people in their own land.” It is impossible to be pro-Israel and to be pro-Palestinian state at the same time.
