Great post – thank you for this thoughtful analysis. We face a challenge where some want to redefine what we mean by the Gospel and even what ‘truth’ is.

Oh yes, I remember that Mark Driscoll (whose church was part of the group named for Mars Hill) made a big deal of this idea of “borrowing” from paganism to point to or illustrate spiritual truths. However, a godly, faithful pastor/evangelist/missionary whom I have known for years, points to 1 Corinthians 2: 1-5 to show why he believes that Paul abandoned the idea of referring to pagan ideas later in his ministry: “And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

Continued… If we wait, we won’t have time to preach. But after that, we can disciple them and build friendships with those who did get saved. If they are not interested in the gospel, getting saved, and are not convicted of sin, what then is the point in having a relationship with them? What fellowship has light with darkness, etc.? I’m not saying it MUST be done first thing, we may not always have the chance. But let me share this. Over the years I have formed some really solid friendships with people who really admire me as a person of good character. When I finally did gently begin to share the gospel and where I stand as a Christian….. whisk! They were gone like a bullet! Those ‘great friends’ I thought I had were gone in a blink! So don’t waste your time that way if you have a chance to share it sooner. Do it as soon as you can. That is our calling on this earth.

Great post! Yes, they twist it all backwards. First, like you said, the gospel can’t be presented accurately without addressing the problem of sin. Sin is the problem, Christ’s work on the cross is the solution. They need to understand that they are sinners and that they need to repent, that is part of the true Gospel message, without that it is not the true gospel. Jesus came to deal with sin, if sin was not a big problem, then He would not have needed to die on the cross for our sins. We need atonement and forgiveness for sins. He also gives us the victory over sin in our lives henceforth. It’s all about dealing with sin and our need to be saved from sin. The angel said to Mary that Jesus would ‘save His people from their sins.’ There are so many bible verses. It’s not about linking to a sinful culture, it’s about rescuing those who are in it. As for the ‘friendship’ thing, the first problem is, how great of a friendship can you have with the unsaved? Hmmm. Evangelism is for all situations. We don’t see any pre-requisites put forth nor practiced in the Bible. Jesus said to preach the Gospel to ‘every creature.’ We don’t have time for that, let alone to try to establish a relationship with them first. We are to preach and not wait for anything.

The whole friendship/ relationship evangelism is such a lie and this article is an excellent resource. I hear people quote St. Francis of Assisi who said, “share the gospel but rarely use words.” Paul said (and did) the exact. He preached Christ crucified whenever and where ever he was.
