Trusting God Through It All

“Trusting God,” for a serious Christian, means trusting the God of the Holy Bible. And the Bible is very explicit about who God is and how and why He is worthy of our complete and total trust. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Matthew 22:32). He is the One who created the world and all living things (Genesis 1:1). He loved the world so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world that whosoever believes in Him can have everlasting life (John 3:16). His attributes, works, commandments, and teachings are clearly put forth in Scripture. However, our Spiritual Adversary is continually challenging and attempting to change God’s teachings and our understanding of who God is. In so doing, this deceiver’s ultimate purpose is to undermine our trust in the God of the Bible.

Scripture records that when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He resisted the Devil’s temptations by standing on God’s Word. “It is written” was Jesus’ straightforward rebuttal to Satan’s twisted proposals. And when questioned or reproached by others, our response as believers should always be the same (Psalm 119:42). Whatever the cost and without any compromise, we are to trust God in all that we do and say. John H. Sammis’s 1887 hymn Trust and Obey reminds us that the only way to be happy in Jesus is to trust and obey.

When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

Louisa Stead’s hymn—Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus (1882)—helps us remember that we trust in Jesus by just taking Him at His Word:

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise;
Just to know “Thus saith the Lord.
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

Surely, it is easy to trust in God when things are going well, but we must continue that trust when things are not going so well. The following selected Bible verses affirm why we need to maintain our trust in God—both in season and out of season.

Trust

Trust God
They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. (Psalm 125:1-2)*

For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee. (Psalm 71:5-6)

Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD. (Psalm 31:5)

Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD. (Psalm 4:4-5)

Trust God and Be Known by God
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. (Nahum 1:7)

Trust God’s Word
So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. (Psalm 119:42)

Trust God’s Son
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:12-14)

Trust God’s Name
For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. (Psalm 33:21)

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. (Psalm 9:10)

I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD. (Zephaniah 3:12)

He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. (Matthew 12:19-21)

Trust God’s Holiness
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. (Psalm 22:3-5)

Trust God With All Your Heart
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Trust God and Commit Thy Way Unto Him
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. (Psalm 37:4-5)

Trust God and His Goodness
Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men! (Psalm 31:19)

Trust God’s Mercy
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. (Psalm 52:8)

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. (Psalm 32:10)

But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me. (Psalm 13:5-6)

Trust God’s Strength
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength. (Isaiah 26:4)

Trust God Our Rock
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. (Psalm 18:2)

The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. (2 Samuel 22:3)

Trust God as Our Refuge and Fortress
I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. (Psalm 91:2)

My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me. (Psalm 144:2)

Trust God Our Shield
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. (Proverbs 30:5)

Trust God Our Buckler
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. (2 Samuel 22:31)

Trust God and the Shelter of His Wings
I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah. (Psalm 61:4)

How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. (Psalm 36:7)

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. (Psalm 91:4)

Trust God and Not Be Afraid
In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. (Psalm 56:11)

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. (Isaiah 12:2)

Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. (Psalm 56:1-3)

He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. (Psalm 112:7)

Trust God in Prayer
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee. (Psalm 143:8)

Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. (Psalm 16:1)
O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. (Psalm 25:2)

In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion. (Psalm 71:1)

But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute. (Psalm 141:8)

Trust God and Be Helped
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. (Psalm 28:7)

Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. (Psalm 115:11)

Trust God and Be Delivered From the Wicked
And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. (Psalm 37:40)

Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. (Psalm 34:21-22)

Trust God and Be Saved
Show thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. (Psalm 17:7)

And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. (Psalm 37:40)

Trust God—Not Man
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8)

Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. (Jeremiah 17:5)

Trust God—Not Friends or Guides
Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. (Micah 7:5-7)

Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders. And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity. Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD. (Jeremiah 9:4-6)

Trust God and Not Ourselves
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us. (2 Corinthians 1:9-10)

He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. (Proverbs 28:25-26)

And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God. (2 Corinthians 3:4-5)

Trust God and Not Wealth
They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. (Psalm 49:6-7)

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. (1 Timothy 6:17)

Trust God and Be Safe
The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. (Proverbs 29:25)

Trust God and Do Good
Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. (Psalm 37:3)

Trust God and Declare His Works
But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works. (Psalm 73:28)

Trust God and Rejoice
But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. (Psalm 5:11)

Trust God and Be Glad
The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory. (Psalm 64:10)

Trust God and Be Happy
He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he. (Proverbs 16:20)

Trust God in All Circumstances
O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me. (Psalm 7:1)

Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him. (Job 13:15)
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. (1 Timothy 4:10)

Trust God at All Times
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. (Psalm 62:8)

Trust God and Be Blessed
O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee. (Psalm 84:12)

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. (Psalm 34:8)

Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. (Psalm 40:4)

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

Trust God and Be Kept in Peace
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (Isaiah 26:3)

Trust God Forever
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength. (Isaiah 26:4)

Trusting Jesus

The 1876 hymn, Trusting Jesus, written by Edgar P. Stites and put to music by pastor Dwight Moody’s music minister, Ira D. Sankey, says it all. Trusting Jesus through it all. Trusting Jesus that is all.

UPDATE ON WARREN B. SMITH

On July 5th, we reported that author and speaker Warren B. Smith’s house in central California had caught on fire causing Warren and his wife, Joy, to evacuate the home. They lost four pets in the fire. We also reported that shortly after the house fire, a forest fire was heading in the direction of the Smith’s property (which is forested). Here is an update since we issued the report and prayer request. Within a few hours from when we sent out the prayer request, forest fire fighters put out the approaching forest fire. As for the house fire, while municipal fire fighters were able to save the house from being completely burnt down, the house suffered enough damage that Warren and Joy have been told it will be six months before the house will be habitable. They are currently in the process of removing smoke-damaged items for assessment.

The outpouring of e-mails, phone calls, prayers, and support by Lighthouse Trails readers has touched Warren and Joy significantly. Warren asked us to tell our readers how deeply thankful and encouraged they are to see such love and concern coming their way during this traumatic situation. The Smith’s are staying in a nearby location and in the middle of searching for a suitable temporary living situation that is close to their home while repairs are being made.
