(RNS) Bishop Tony Palmer, a charismatic preacher who used a cellphone camera to record Pope Francis issuing an appeal for Christian unity between Catholics and evangelicals, died Sunday (July 20) after a motorcycle crash in the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

In January,\u00a0Palmer held the\u00a0smartphone that recorded Pope Francis<\/a> calling on all Christians to set aside their differences.\u00a0Palmer, a bishop and international ecumenical officer with the independent Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches, also helped coordinate the pope\u2019s meeting with televangelists<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n

In the video, Pope Francis referred to\u00a0Palmer as \u201cmy brother, a bishop-brother,\u201d saying they had been friends for years. \u201cLet us allow our longing to increase so that it propels us to find each other, embrace each other and to praise Jesus Christ as the only Lord of history,\u201d Francis\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Born in the U.K. and raised partly in South Africa,\u00a0Palmer had\u00a0served as the director of the South Africa office of Kenneth Copeland Ministries. On Copeland\u2019s website,\u00a0Palmer said he had met Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires (now Pope Francis) in 2008 when Palmer\u00a0sought\u00a0permission to work with charismatic Catholics in the city.<\/p>\n

In a February blog post\u00a0for Patheos, Anglican-turned-Catholic priest the Rev.\u00a0Dwight Longenecker focused on<\/a>\u00a0Palmer as representing something new in Anglicanism, especially for Palmer\u2019s\u00a0involvement in the Convergent Movement, a charismatic Anglican group that\u00a0ordains women as deacons and priests.
