{"id":16050,"date":"2014-09-09T16:11:19","date_gmt":"2014-09-09T20:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=16050"},"modified":"2026-07-31T15:15:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T22:15:05","slug":"contemplative-spiritual-formation-in-mennonite-sunday-school-curriculum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/contemplative-spiritual-formation-in-mennonite-sunday-school-curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Contemplative Spiritual Formation in Mennonite Sunday School Curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Menno-Lite Blog<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/shinecurriculum.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171027041647\/https:\/\/shinecurriculum.com\/wp-content\/themes\/shine\/images\/ShineLogo.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/span>The September issue of the Mennonite Brethren Herald[1] is promoting a long awaited new curriculum for children from age 3 to grade 8. <em>Shine<\/em> has been in the works for three years, and is now available and coming to Sunday School classrooms in a Mennonite church near you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The new Sunday school curriculum <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kindredproductions.com\/shine\/\">Shine: Living in God\u2019s Light<\/a> for fall quarter 2014 is now available from MennoMedia and Brethren Press, the publishing houses of the Church of the Brethren, Mennonite Church Canada and Mennonite Church USA.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <strong>New Anabaptist curriculum Shines<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mbherald.com\/new-anabaptist-curriculum-shines\">http:\/\/mbherald.com\/new-anabaptist-curriculum-shines<\/a>\/<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article explains the importance of one of the aspects of this curriculum \u2013 the spiritual formation of children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is spiritual formation for children important, and why do you call it that now instead of \u201cSunday school\u201d?<\/strong><br \/>\nSunday school indicates a school model based on acquiring information. We certainly want children to become biblically literate, but we hope for something much deeper. Spiritual formation happens in vibrant communities of God\u2019s Spirit. One of the things we try to convey is that children\u2019s natural language of prayer is thanksgiving. They need to experience joy and hope. Children also need to know that God walks with us in difficult times.
