MONTGOMERY, Ala. \u2013<\/strong> The Alabama Supreme Court has issued a historic order halting the issuance of same-sex \u201cmarriage\u201d licenses in the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs it has done for approximately two centuries, Alabama law allows for \u2018marriage\u2019 between only one man and one woman,\u201d the 148-page order<\/a> reads. \u201cAlabama probate judges have a ministerial duty not to issue any marriage license contrary to this law. Nothing in the United States Constitution alters or overrides this duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The order comes after a county probate judge asked the court for guidance on how to respond to a recent ruling striking down the state\u2019s Sanctity of Marriage Act unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

As previously reported<\/a>, in 2013, two lesbians in the state sued Gov. Robert Bentley, Attorney General Luther Strange and Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis\u2014among others\u2014in an attempt to overturn the law after one of the women was denied from adopting the other woman\u2019s child.
