{"id":4135,"date":"2010-03-08T22:28:48","date_gmt":"2010-03-09T02:28:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=4135"},"modified":"2025-09-18T04:26:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:26:40","slug":"gay-weddings-to-be-held-in-uk-churches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/gay-weddings-to-be-held-in-uk-churches\/","title":{"rendered":"Gay \u201cweddings\u201d to be held in UK \u201cchurches\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>from the <em>Independent<\/em> (UK)<\/strong><br \/>\n(courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20101230194149\/http:\/\/truedsicernment.com\/2010\/03\/06\/gay-weddings-to-be-held-in-uk-churches\/\">True Discernment blog<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Gay men and women will finally be allowed to marry in churches after the House of Lords dramatically voted in favour of lifting the ban on religious premises holding same-sex partnerships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The amendment to the Equality Bill, which was tabled as a free vote by gay Muslim peer Waheed Alli, received overwhelming backing in the Lords,<strong> <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>including from a number of prominent Anglican bishops.<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under current UK law religious venues are forbidden from holding civil partnerships, although some liberal denominations within Christianity and Judaism have been willing to bless gay unions once a partnership ceremony has taken place elsewhere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lifting of the ban, which still needs to be approved by the House of Commons, will now give religious venues the option of conducting civil partnerships \u2013 but it will not compel them to do so, as some traditionalists had feared.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lord Alli denied the suggestion that religious communities would be forced to accept gay marriages.\u00a0\u00a0. . . . . .
