{"id":6593,"date":"2011-06-16T23:14:34","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T03:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=6593"},"modified":"2026-07-07T13:30:34","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T20:30:34","slug":"usa-today-im-a-marxist-dalai-lama-tells-chinese-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/usa-today-im-a-marxist-dalai-lama-tells-chinese-students\/","title":{"rendered":"USA Today: &#8216;I&#8217;m a Marxist,&#8217; Dalai Lama tells Chinese students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>By Cathy Lynn Grossman<br \/><em>USA TODAY\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<figure><span style=\"color: initial;\">Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, leading a ceremony at the University of Minnesota last week, told Chinese students he was a Marxist.<\/span><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>Usually what we hear from the Dalai Lama is an insistent yet soothing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/religion\/2007-10-17-dalai-lama-teachings_n.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">voice for compassion and peace<\/a>.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;So Tsering Namgyal, a journalist based in Minneapolis, was jolted by the Dalai Lama&#8217;s talk to 150 Chinese students this month at the University of Minnesota. Writing at <em>Religion Dispatches<\/em>, he says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Midway through the conversation, His Holiness, much to their surprise, told them &#8220;as far as socio-political beliefs are concerned, <a href=\"https:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/dalai-lama-i-am-a-marxist-but-not-a-leninist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I consider myself a Marxist<\/a> &#8230; But not a Leninist,&#8221; he clarified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0After all, China is constantly pressing to legitimize its takeover of Tibet in world opinion. Meanwhile, the Buddhist spiritual leader is the global symbol of Tibetan opposition and what the opposition considers the obliteration of its independence and religious culture.
