MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay \u2013\u00a0 Legislators have\u00a0 voted in Uruguay by a razor-thin margin to legalize abortion.<\/p>\n

In Latin America, where the majority of people are Catholic, no country\u00a0 except Cuba has made abortions accessible to all women during the first\u00a0 trimester of pregnancy.<\/p>\n

The vote in Uruguay’s Chamber of Deputies was 50-49 just before midnight\u00a0 Tuesday after several lawmakers on each side of the debate said they could not\u00a0 in good conscience go along with their parties, and allowed substitutes to vote\u00a0 in their stead.<\/p>\n

President Jose Mujica says he will allow it to become law, if the Senate\u00a0 approves the changes. The Senate already has approved an even more liberal\u00a0 version of the abortion measure. To read more, click here.<\/a><\/p>\n
