Ode to the Watchmen on the Wall

Note: This was sent to us from a Lighthouse Trails reader. We know many of our readers truly are watchmen and watchwomen on the wall. This is an ode to those of you who defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ, speaking the truth in love, strength, and courage, by His grace.

The Watchman
by Scottish pastor, Horatius Bonar (1808-1889)

Thy way, not mine, O Lord, however dark it be;

Lead me by Thine own hand, choose out the path for me.

“…if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’ … I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.” Ezekiel 33:6-7

“Some one, then, must undertake the ungracious task of probing and laying bare the evils of the age; for men must not be allowed to congratulate themselves that all is well. If others will not, he will.

If others shrink from the obloquy of such a work, he will not…. He loves his fellow-men too well. They may upbraid him; they may call him a misanthropist, or a prophet of evil; they may ascribe his warnings to the worst of motives, such as pride, or arrogance, or self-esteem, or malice, or envy; but he will give no heed to these unjust insinuations.

He will prefer being thus misunderstood and maligned, to allowing men to precipitate themselves upon a ruin which they see not. Rather than that they should perish, he will allow his own good name to be spoken against. He will risk every thing, even the hatred of brethren, rather than withhold the warning. If they give no heed to it, he has, at least, saved his own soul. If they do, he has saved both his own soul and theirs.

He would rather take up the glad tidings of peace, and tell men of Him who came the first time for shame and death, and who is coming the second time for glory and dominion; but he feels as one who has a special and personal message to deliver, which cannot be postponed.

He must remember that he is a watchman; and, having seen danger pressing on, he must not hesitate to make it known. He must speak his message of forewarning and rebuke, sparing no arrows, and neither smoothing down nor hiding any form of sin, but laying his finger upon every sore, and beseeching men to turn from their ungodliness. The evils around him press upon him sadly; the coming evils are foreshadowed upon his spirit, and, therefore, he lifts up his voice like a trumpet.

Satan has many snares which need to be detected; the world has many spells and lures which must be disenchanted; religion has many guises which must be unmasked, many devious paths of inconsistency which must be pointed out, many cherished errors which must be condemned, many carnal taints which must be abhorred and shunned. All these he must protest against without fear or favour.”

Smooth let it be or rough,

It will be still the best;

Winding or straight, it leads

Right onward to Thy rest.

I dare not choose my lot;

I would not, if I might;

Choose Thou for me, my God,

So I shall walk aright.

VCY America Interviews Saddleback Health Seminar Attendee – Apostasy Exposed!

On January 27th, Ingrid Schlueter of VCY America interviewed Jennifer Pekich on the CrossTalk radio program. Jennifer had recently attended the  health seminar at Saddleback Church, in which Rick Warren brought in three leading “health” specialists to train Saddleback’s congregants how to be healthy. CrossTalk explains:

Why should these men cause “red flags” to come up for Christians? Jennifer attended the Daniel Plan kick-off gathering on January 15. From her notes she shares how from Kundalini Yoga to Transcendental Meditation, these men are steeped in Eastern mysticism and the occult. In addition, through it all, numerous U.N. buzz-phrases could be heard; phrases such as “sustainable living,” smart growth,” “public-private partnerships,” and more.

Are Rick Warren and his associates attempting to restructure the church and society by warming Christians up to a fanciful sounding global plan? Decide for yourself when you review this edition of Crosstalk.

By Paul Proctor

This may come as a shock to most Christians, but if you do a search of the less contemporary translations of scripture, the word “feelings” is virtually nonexistent. Where it does appear, it is cited as more of a superficial, even negative attribute than a positive; and yet, as we watch and listen to many from today’s churches, be they leaders or laymen, not only do we see a clear fixation on feelings, both physical and emotional, we notice that those feelings have by and large become a replacement for faith.

In fact, if you substitute the word “feelings” wherever you see the word “faith” in those older Bible versions, it will become clear to you what motivates and guides the average “Christian” today – point being: most of us are not following the Living Word of God by faith, we’re simply following our feelings and calling it “faith.”

This doesn’t require a Bible.

When one considers the sobering words of the prophet Jeremiah, who said: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked…” it should cause us to take a discerning look at what moves us. If our worship and service to Jesus Christ is measured by mood, then may I suggest our “Christianity” is more theatrical than theological? CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING.

The Cloud of Unknowing – “Take a little word, and repeat it.”

The Cloud of Unknowing, written by an anonymous monk, has passed under the radar of many church libraries,  Christian bookstores, and theological seminaries and colleges. But this book is a primer on mystical contemplative spirituality. Check your church library and see if this book is sitting on the shelves.

by Ray Yungen

To my dismay, I discovered ‘mystical silence’ is accomplished by the same methods used by New Agers to achieve their silence–the mantra and the breath! Contemplative prayer is the repetition of what is referred to as a prayer word or sacred word until one reaches a state where the soul, rather than the mind, contemplates God. Contemplative prayer teacher and Zen master Willigis Jager brought this out when he postulated:

Do not reflect on the meaning of the word; thinking and reflecting must cease, as all mystical writers insist. Simply”sound” the word silently, letting go of all feelings and thoughts.( Jager, Contemplation, p. 31)

Those with some theological training may recognize this teaching as the historical stream going back centuries to such figures as Meister Eckhart, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Julian of Norwich. One of the most well-known writings on the subject is the classic 14th century treatise, The Cloud of Unknowing, written by an anonymous author. It is essentially a manual on contemplative prayer inviting a beginner to:

Take just a little word, of one syllable rather than of two … With this word you are to strike down every kind of thought under the cloud of forgetting. (Ken Kaisch, Finding God, citing The Cloud of Unknowing, p. 223)

The premise here is that in order to really know God, mysticism must be practiced–the mind has to be shut down or turned off so that the cloud of unknowing where the presence of God awaits can be experienced. Practitioners of this method believe that if the sacred words are Christian, you will get Christ–it is simply a matter of intent even though the method is identical to occult and Eastern practices. (from A Time of Departing, p. 33)

Help Lighthouse Trails - Contact Your Local Libraries

If you have not already done so, please consider contacting your local libraries, which can include local college and university libraries, and ask them to purchase copies of Lighthouse Trails books to put into library circulation. This will not only help get the word out about our work at Lighthouse Trails but will also assure that Lighthouse Trails Publishing will be considered a scholarly and professional publisher by the Library of Congress. Today, we were contacted by the Library of Congress to inform us that Lighthouse Trails books are not in enough traditional libraries, and our status with the Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication program has now been threatened. Thus we are making this appeal to our readers to please help us. Below are the ISBNs of the books we would like circulating in library databases. If you use this link, you can enter any of these titles into the WorldCat search engine and see which library databases our books are currently in. You probably won't be able to get your local libraries to carry all these titles, but you should be able to get them to carry a few of them, and it won't cost you anything. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Dr. Oz and Deepak Chopra: Meditate to Lose Weight

In the video below, Dr. Oz, the new weight-loss mentor for thousands of Christians through Rick Warren’s new Daniel Plan, talks to New Ager Deepak Chopra about meditating to lose weight. What they don’t tell you in this video is that eastern-style meditation can put participants into contact with demonic spirits. The Bible warns against such harmful practices. Yet, Dr. Oz, also a Reiki advocate, is taking his spiritual “insights” to Rick Warren’s followers. Note: After you have watched this video, please consider spending a few minutes reading the Word of God and praying for those who are attending Rick Warren’s Daniel Plan. BOOK REVIEW: How one Jewish believer escaped ‘Hitler’s Hell’

Book Review by Lee Holman
Former Editor at Messianic Times

With all of the thousands of books out there about the Holocaust, you might be tempted to ask, why read another?

Indeed, there are countless works that document the cruelty, the hate, the deprivation and death inflicted by the Third Reich. Those such as Eli Weisel’s “Night” provide a first-hand account that is masterfully written but leave the reader depressed, wondering why God abandoned His people during this period of history.

But there is a book, “Trapped in Hitler’s Hell” by Anita Dittman with Jan Markell, that will sweep you into 1930s Germany and back with your faith firmly intact.

This is the true story of Ms. Dittman, whose first encounter with Hitler’s “new Germany” took place in the first grade, when she was threatened and mocked by her classmates. She is the daughter of an anti-Nazi newspaper editor and an Orthodox Jewish mother. Her father, a Gentile and an atheist, succumbs to Nazi pressure to divorce his Jewish wife and abandon his two daughters, Anita and Hella.

All Jews were required to register with the government and their names were promptly given to public schools so they could be monitored.

The hateful threats of “We’ll get you after school, you little Jew brat,” escalated into beatings and lack of support from teachers.

Anita finds solace in, of all places, her German textbooks, which at that time still included references to Jesus. She reads all she can find about Him and later finds answers to her questions from a Lutheran pastor who helps get her placed in a Lutheran school and later puts his life on the line to try to save her family from the death camps. Pastor Hornig is able to get Hella out of the country to London but the Gestapo clamps down completely before he can get Anita and her mother out.

The Dittmans are then transferred from their comfortable row house in Breslau to a Jewish ghetto. They live in daily fear of hearing the Gestapo agents’ boots walking down the main hall of their apartment building, wondering at which door they will stop.

Then came the knock on the door, the shout of “open up, open up” and the predictable announcement, “You have five minutes to gather your things in one small bag and come with us.”

After all of their friends were taken, the Nazis came for Anita’s mother, and then for her. She miraculously makes it through several death-defying situations, including a stint in a hospital with a Nazi nurse who slips her a poison pill that she promises will “make you feel better.” But for every evil Nazi, there is a well-placed “angel” who helps get Anita out of a jam, and she makes it through the ordeal, barely a shell of her former self physically, but stronger than ever spiritually.

The book carries a stark message for today’s Western Christian. Germany was a Christian country and a democracy that was transformed into a dictatorship because the vast majority of Christians placed their trust in one man to lead them back to the promised land of economic prosperity and respect on the world stage. There were two types of German Christians, those represented by Pastor Hornig, who sacrificed his finances and his own safety to help the Jews, and those represented by Mrs. Michaelis, a self-absorbed, compromising Christian who agreed to take in Anita for a time, only to treat her cruelly. Mrs. Michaelis claims Anita’s food rations for herself and watches the 12-year-old waste away. In contrast, some German farmers secretly slipped food to starving Jews being worked to death in the camps.

The book, originally written in 1979 under the title “Angels in the Camp,” has been repackaged with a new epilogue [and many photos] by Lighthouse Trails Publishing.

If you buy one book this summer, make it “Trapped in Hitler’s Hell.” It will refocus your priorities and recharge your spiritual life.  (from April/May 2006, Messianic Times)

Game-changer! Arizona to pass 2012 eligibility law – Next U.S. President May Have to Prove Citizenship

by Bob Unruh

It could be a game-changer.

A plan in Arizona to require presidential candidates to prove their eligibility to occupy the Oval Office is approaching critical mass, even though it has just been introduced.

The proposal from state Rep. Judy Burges, who carried a similar plan that fell short last year only because of political maneuvering, was introduced yesterday with 16 members of the state Senate as co-sponsors.

It needs only 16 votes in the Senate to pass.

In the House, there are 25 co-sponsors, with the need for only 31 votes for passage, and Burges told WND that there were several chamber members who confirmed they support the plan and will vote for it, but simply didn’t wish to be listed as co-sponsors.

The proposal, which also is being taken up in a number of other states, is highly specific and directly addresses the questions that have been raised by Barack Obama’s occupancy of the White House. It says:

Within ten days after submittal of the names of the candidates, the national political party committee shall submit an affidavit of the presidential candidate in which the presidential candidate states the candidate’s citizenship and age and shall append to the affidavit documents that prove that the candidate is a natural born citizen, prove the candidate’s age and prove that the candidate meets the residency requirements for President of the United States as prescribed in article II, section 1, Constitution of the United States.  Read more: Game-changer! New Autobiography by Roger Oakland and Understand the Times Ministry Banquet

Lighthouse Trails has contracted with Roger Oakland and will be releasing his autobiography Let There Be Light sometime in 2011. The book was scheduled to be released in 2010, but a serious injury by Roger in 2009 prohibited the book from being ready. The book was first published several years ago under a different publisher. The 2011 edition will be updated extensively. We will announce at a further date when the book will be released and ready for pre-orders.

Ministry Banquet

Understand The Times will be holding a Ministry Outreach Banquet on February 25, 2011 at the Sheraton in Anaheim, California from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The address for the Sheraton is:

Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort
1855 S Harbor Blvd
Anaheim, CA 92802

This banquet is open to all who can be there.

The cost of the banquet will be $25.00 per person or a table of 8 people will be $199.00. Dinner is included. Reservations can be made online or by calling (800) 689-1888.

For more information or to make reservations online, please go to

SPECIAL NOTE: As many of you know, Roger Oakland has been slowly returning to ministry after his 2009 serious accident that took place on his Saskatchewan farm. Because Roger has been an outspoken and courageous voice against the spiritual deceptions that have come into the church today, he has been a target for vicious attack by Satan. There have been rumors spread about Roger that are untrue and sometimes harmful to his ministry. One rumor going around was that Roger was dead. He learned of this one when he walked into a Christian bookstore, asked for a copy of his book, Faith Undone, and the cashier told him, "Oh the author is dead." Roger answered, "I don't think so. I am he." We know the Lord is our defender, but these are not easy things to endure. Nevertheless, in spite of these attacks, Understand the Times is going forth. We believe Roger can be likened to a pioneer who is forging a trail through an overgrown, weedy path. Many times, pioneers must go alone, but they prepare a way for others. He has lost personally and ministerially friends and supporters who have felt he was too outspoken. Praise God, there have also been many who have voiced their love and support. Please continue to pray for Roger that he will be strengthened daily in the strength of the Lord. Also pray for his family.

Roger's ministry, Understand the Times, is pressing onward in its efforts to contend for the faith in a world that is growing spiritually darker every day. In a few weeks, he and two fellow colleagues will be heading to Myanmar where they will minister to the teachers and children in their orphan homes. When he returns, the banquet mentioned above will take place. If you are in support of Roger and his ministry, if you can, we hope you will attend the dinner. There will be worship music and a number of speakers.

38 Years of Roe v. Wade - 53 Million Babies Murdered

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. (Lk 1:41)

And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him. (Heb 7:9-10)

During the past couple of weeks there have been two news items in the mainstream media which have astounding spiritual implications for every American whether they are a Christian or not. As reported through the Moriel website, at some point during this past year the U. S. effected the 53 millionth abortion since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling 37 years ago. A parallel story was also published announcing that the health department in New York City reports that 40% of all pregnancies in that city end in abortion. (NY Times article here.) This second story in particular indicates that this behavior is accelerating in its pace and it will take much fewer than 37 years to reach the next 53 millionth abortion. I know that simply explaining biblical truth will probably not change individual behavior much less this staggering, overall trend, but it is important to blow the horn of warning regardless of whether it is heeded or not.

One of the key arguments – perhaps the key argument – revolves around the inception of life. At what point life begins seems to be the fulcrum for the debate along its entire spectrum by all sides. Traditionally Christians cite the verse above of John the Baptist’s recognition of the coming Messiah while still in Elizabeth’s womb as doctrinal evidence that life begins there. One of the biggest problems with Roe v. Wade, however, is that it established the concept of trimesters and defined the parameters of the debate. So the arguments are often limited to a discussion of which trimester spawns life or at the least has limited the argument to the procreation process. I would suggest that Christians need to carefully read and understand the second scriptural quotation provided.

And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him. (Heb 7:9-10)

It speaks of Levi as “still in the loins” of Abraham. Abraham was not Levi’s immediate biological father. In fact, he is not even his biological grandfather. In accordance with our Western approach to genealogy, Abraham was Levi’s great-great grandfather. Although most would limit an abortion argument to the birth of Abraham’s son Isaac, the biblical view is that life in a single person encompasses at least three subsequent generations! The scriptural view would appear to be that life for Levi was not limited to a trimester during the pregnancy of his mother, but that it was accounted for across several generations going back to “the loins of his father” Abraham. It extended beyond just his immediate father to several generations back. Or another way of looking at it is the seed we carry is not limited to the immediate generation to come but involves all the generations to come after us.

While the more immediate situation is that we should weep and mourn before God for what has been done and the inevitable judgment it will bring upon us, it should be incumbent on every Christian to know God’s mind as to when life begins and to not be drawn into an argument which is not tenable in the first place and which has been founded on incorrect assumptions from the outset. If they can get us to argue on their terms, which is based on a wrong and false notion from the beginning, we have unwittingly lost in general and been drawn into their deception specifically.

As Egypt goes offline US gets internet 'kill switch' bill ready

Ben Grubb and Asher Moses
The Sydney Morning Herald

As Egypt's government attempts to crackdown on street protests by shutting down internet and mobile phone services, the US is preparing to reintroduce a bill that could be used to shut down the internet.

The legislation, which would grant US President Barack Obama powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet, would soon be reintroduced to a senate committee, reported.

It was initially introduced last year but expired with a new Congress.

Senator Susan Collins, a co-sponsor of the bill, said that unlike in Egypt, where the government was using its powers to quell dissent by shutting down the internet, it would not.

“My legislation would provide a mechanism for the government to work with the private sector in the event of a true cyber emergency,” Collins said in an emailed statement to Wired. “It would give our nation the best tools available to swiftly respond to a significant threat.”

The proposed legislation, introduced into the US Senate by independent senator Joe Lieberman, who is chairman of the US Homeland Security committee, seeks to grant the President broad emergency powers over the internet in times of national emergency. Click here to continue reading.

Many of our readers may not realize that Lighthouse Trails Publishing began in 2002 with the publishing of just one book, A Time of Departing. From there, we began publishing other titles such as Faith Undone and Trapped in Hitler's Hell. In 2004, we began Lighthouse Trails Research Project and From the Lighthouse e-newsletter; the research project is nearly 1000 pages of indexed research and information, all free.

In the last 5 years, we began bringing other carefully selected products into our store, some from other publishers and ministries, and also started the From the Lighthouse blog and the Lighthouse  Trails Publishing blog and the Missions for Truth website. Then just last year, we launched The Shepherd's Garden, which we consider a "tent-making" effort to help sustain our publishing ministry.

While we hope to be able to continue the free aspects of our ministry, we also hope to be able to continue as a publisher, especially in this day and age when so many Christian publishers are publishing thousands of books each year that promote contemplative, emerging, and the new spirituality that negates the Gospel message.

We have made strong efforts to build our collection of both our own and other materials - ones that we believe you can trust for your families, friends, and churches. We hope you will consider the products at Lighthouse Trails Publishing worthy of your time and resources budget. Below are the categories we now offer. I just wanted to tell you thank you for your tea samples. I am enjoying both; the peppermint and chai. I have never had a peppermint tea so good. I gave a tea combo pack to a friend for Christmas. She and her husband put a teabag at the place of each person sitting at their Christmas lunch table of 6, including guests. They went around the table and each person read his/her verse, and then all of them thought together about what each verse was saying. It was a nice way to use the tea and to introduce Scripture to the event. B.G., Texas
I received my order of Shepherd's Tea today. I just wanted to send you a quick note to tell you I'm sitting in my jammies, bathrobe, & slippers right now enjoying a cup of Shepherd's Tea from Lighthouse Trails. So tasty! Thank you!
