The Telegraph UK: Archbishop of Canterbury: “meditation [for children] is the key to living in this insane world”

LTRP Note: The following is posted for research and informational purposes and not as an endorsement.

“Schoolchildren and people with no religious background should be encouraged to try meditation as a way to help them understand Christianity, the Archbishop of Canterbury has suggested.”

By John Bingam
The Telegraph UK

Dr Rowan Williams said people in the modern world were struggling with “chaotic” emotions as a result of living in an “insane” consumerist society driven by advertising and the banking system.

He called for a revival of centuries-old monastic traditions to help people become “properly human”.

His call came during an important address to the Pope and the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church from around the world at the Vatican last night.

Benedict XVI invited Dr Williams, as leader of the Anglican Communion, as well as the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, to address the Synod of Bishops in a gesture of reconciliation with other churches.

The gathering had been discussing how the Catholic Church, with its traditions, can reach out to increasingly secular societies. Dr Williams used his address to urge the Church to revive traditions of silent prayer and meditation, as practised by Benedictine monks. Click here to continue reading.

Another Side of the Story: New York Times – How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body

LTRP Note: For several years now, Lighthouse Trails has reported on the spiritual dangers of practicing Yoga. And in spite of some evangelical Christians saying that the Yoga positions are OK to do just as long as you don’t do the meditation part, Lighthouse Trails has maintained the stance that even “just doing the Yoga positions” is putting one’s self in spiritual harm’s way because the positions in Yoga were formulated and created for the purpose of receiving the kundalini (serpent) power. With that in mind, the New York Times article below “How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body” offers an interesting take on Yoga and the health risk it can be on the practitioner’s body. Another good reason not to practice Yoga. (See the links below this article for some of our coverage.)

“How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body”

By William J. Broad
New York Times

On a cold Saturday in early 2009, Glenn Black, a yoga teacher of nearly four decades, whose devoted clientele includes a number of celebrities and prominent gurus, was giving a master class at Sankalpah Yoga in Manhattan. Black is, in many ways, a classic yogi: he studied in Pune, India, at the institute founded by the legendary B. K. S. Iyengar, and spent years in solitude and meditation. He now lives in Rhinebeck, N.Y., and often teaches at the nearby Omega Institute, a New Age emporium spread over nearly 200 acres of woods and gardens. He is known for his rigor and his down-to-earth style. But this was not why I sought him out: Black, I’d been told, was the person to speak with if you wanted to know not about the virtues of yoga but rather about the damage it could do. Many of his regular clients came to him for bodywork or rehabilitation following yoga injuries. This was the situation I found myself in. In my 30s, I had somehow managed to rupture a disk in my lower back and found I could prevent bouts of pain with a selection of yoga postures and abdominal exercises. Then, in 2007, while doing the extended-side-angle pose, a posture hailed as a cure for many diseases, my back gave way. With it went my belief, naïve in retrospect, that yoga was a source only of healing and never harm. Click here to continue reading.

Preparing For Perilous Times and Finding God’s Peace in the Midst of Them

By David Dombrowski
Editor at Lighthouse Trails

For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:12)

Over the last ten years since Lighthouse Trails began, we have been contacted by many who love the Lord and were struggling with great challenges: Some were ostracized by their churches, which had gone Purpose Driven, contemplative, or emerging; some had division in their families; some had financial concerns; and others were worried about health issues – whether their own or that of loved ones. Beyond all of this, many have expressed a sense of uncertainty or foreboding of what the future will bring:

The Bible indicates that in the last days perilous times shall come. And for those of you who have read our review article of The Harbinger, you may remember that our conclusion is that by all indications America is racing toward judgment. Researching for and writing that article quickened to me the realization that something serious or catastrophic could easily come to our country, and we are unprepared. Whether it be nuclear attack, economic collapse, or natural disasters, America appears to be getting only closer to that day.

I know that for the average American (including the American Christian) the idea that mighty America could stumble and fall simply does not register. After all, how could a loving God bring calamity on a nation that has stood so tall for so long? But in considering this, we can see that it is not God who has rejected us but our nation that has continually rejected Him. A case in point is a pastor in a small Oregon town who shared with me how occasionally his church would be permitted to hold an assembly at the local public high school, but one day the mayor approached him and said, “If you even mention God at the assembly, I will have you out of here so fast . . .” But what is a pastor supposed to talk about if he cannot talk about God? Yet, what is even more grievous than our lost freedom is that so many churches have become apostate as they welcome immorality, mystical practices, and false doctrines while often viewing the atonement as outdated and dogmatic.

When judgment comes upon America, it will not be because of a hateful God entertaining Himself with calamity but rather because we, as a nation, have brought judgment upon ourselves. While this nation has a heritage of many who, through great personal sacrifice and a love for God, invited God into the affairs of our nation (and our nation has known prosperity and peace on all our borders) we forget that these blessings all came from God. Now that we have pushed God aside and booted Him out of the country, we have also booted out the blessings and protection we have long known.

None of us really knows what our nation will become if judgment befalls us, but frankly, I feel much more ominous about how corrupt and lawless it will become if God does not judge us. While the call to repentance has been going out for decades now, things have clearly only gotten worse. And while churches are beginning to muster up for national “repentance” and “revival,” God has already moved on to the next step. It is a true saying that those who have sown to the wind will only reap the whirlwind.

Unfortunately, there is much apathy when it comes to warnings of judgment or cataclysmic events. While many prosperity prophets tickle the ears of those who want a soft feel-good gospel, others, in contrast, give warnings of such horrendous proportions (even offering specific dates) of events that could annihilate vast portions of the planet; the net result is that many are being conditioned into indifference.

When perilous events will come, be it judgment or persecution, will we as Christians be ready for it? Such changes can come very rapidly and seemingly overnight; ask Anita Dittman or Diet Eman (Lighthouse Trails’ two Holocaust-survivor authors) if this is not true. They know; they saw it firsthand. Jesus said that men’s hearts would fail from fear of seeing the events happening around them (Luke 21:26). In Luke 21 and Matthew 24, Jesus gives a basic outline of the peril that will precede His return; He did not give specific calendar dates of what will happen, but He did teach us (as do the apostles and prophets) how we can be ready to face the future.

I’m sure we have all seen the ill effects that fear and worry can have on a person’s life, both spiritually and physically. Fear and worry, over an extended period of time, stagnates one spiritually, cripples one emotionally, and breaks one down physically. The enemy (Satan) uses fear whenever possible to thwart the progress of Christians and to promote his agenda. Whole societies have been controlled through fear. When we consider what happened in Nazi Germany, it’s true that great numbers were mesmerized by a charismatic leader with a demonic anointing, but overall he was able to rule the country through fear. Today, we already see the reemergence of fear and intimidation both in our politics and in many churches where fundamental Christianity is marginalized, if not villainized, while immorality and corruption is given special sanctions and promotion.

How can a Christian believer stand under this kind of pressure we see today? Fear is already at work eroding the values we have long held sacred. In many churches, just the pressure to remain popular or contemporary is enough to introduce Yoga and mind-altering meditation (formerly called an occultic practice but today repackaged as “contemplative prayer”) into our churches.

Will the Christians who are still holding back from this landslide of compromised Christianity eventually cower and be absorbed into the system? Will we, like Judas, proceed to give Jesus a kiss while undermining everything He taught? Or, will we like Peter deny that we even know Him? The fact is Jesus is being betrayed and denied on a massive scale today by proclaiming Christians through their embracing of contemplative spirituality and the emerging church, which has an underlying message of rejecting the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ. It’s the worst kind of betrayal.

Fear is not something you can merely put the brakes on – like pressing a pedal in your car. Peter, who so adamantly insisted to Jesus that he would never deny Him even unto death did so three times in the course of one night. How then does one stem the tide of fear (and worry) in his own life?

Over a period of three years, Jesus taught His disciples how to live without being overcome by fear and worry. On one occasion, He told them:

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? (Matthew 6:28-30)

Jesus said all of this after having just said, “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment. . . . Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” (Matthew 6:25, 27).

Now let me explain what I believe Jesus meant and did not mean by these passages. First of all, in saying what He did about taking no thought for our lives, I do not think Jesus was advocating for personal neglect or for unpreparedness. On a personal note, Deborah and I have always been advocates for preparedness. Let me give an example. Back in 1999, we helped organize the Y2K task force in our hometown. During that year, we helped many families in our community learn how to be prepared for disaster (not just Y2K). Then, when nothing significant happened on New Year’s Day, some mocked what we had done. I heard one well-known Christian leader say, after the fact, on his radio program that he had known all along that nothing was going to happen, and that those who had prepared were a bunch of idiots. As I listened to him speak, I wondered why during the year prior, when technical experts and those considered computer savvy were giving out warnings about computer crashes, that this leader with a public forum had not raised a voice to counter the efforts at preparedness. Be it as it may, our involvement with Y2K was not really about a catastrophe happening on a specific calendar date, but for us it was a wake-up call in realizing that our society has become so dependent on the local supermarket and our power grid that most would have scarcely enough food, water, and fuel to last only a few days even in a small-scale crisis. A case in point happened about a year ago in the town I was in when some teenagers were seen playing around the city-water site. The authorities then became concerned that the water could have been tampered with and instructed the townspeople not to drink, cook, or bathe in that water until it was tested. Needless to say, the bottled water in the grocery stores disappeared from the shelves by that afternoon. And this was not even a big scare, and the water proved to be safe.

Jesus’ words about the lilies of the field were a much-needed exhortation to trust God in all aspects of our lives. At the same time, however, Jesus was talking to an agrarian people who knew and practiced preparedness as they utilized their skills in growing and properly storing food for the winter. If this were not true, Solomon would not have praised the ordinary ant in saying, “consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest” (Proverbs 6:6-8). Personally, I think it is an embarrassment to our federal government that they would go so far as to vilify people who harvest and store their food for the winter as “hoarders” when this has been common practice in the world practically from the beginning of man until now.

If you have followed our ministry for any length of time then you know that we have never yet talked about preparedness. Yet in by-gone days, it used to be a very normal task for people to cut firewood, tend the livestock, and plant or harvest the fields; so while it is not my intention to get into a lengthy discussion on the practical matters of life, let me say in passing that it would not hurt to consider the situations in which we live. While many of us may be locked into situations or locations that make change nearly impossible, it doesn’t hurt, if you have the opportunity, to consider what would be best for you and your family in the future. Especially if you live in a highly populated city, it does not take much imagination to think of the crime and looting that could ensue after a serious power failure or disaster.

Now, having said all this, let’s return to the words of Jesus when He said that we should take no thought for our lives. The fact is, we are only as safe as the Lord enables us to be. Hence, regardless of our situation in life, our only real option for safety is to place our lives and our futures in the hands of the Lord. While it would be wise to make whatever practical measures we can for the future, none of us are immune from disaster, loss, or theft. To be truly prepared to face the future means above all to be spiritually prepared – and that means having a right relationship with the Lord.

Now is the time for Christians to “lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). In other words, like the athlete set out to run a race, we need to strip off any excess baggage that would hinder us from giving the Lord our very best. God’s overwhelming desire for us is that we walk with Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength (Mark 12:30).

I would like to finish with some thoughts about what it means to walk in God’s peace.

First of all, let me say that just as the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16), it is also the avenue to peace with God: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

All of us who have entered into union with God through believing the Gospel – namely that Jesus purchased our salvation fully through His death on the Cross – have God’s peace available to us. Today, it seems that many proclaiming Christians do not really have a sense of God’s peace (which I believe is why so many are turning to contemplative prayer and other mystical practices), and I am fully persuaded it is because they have become removed from the simplicity of the Gospel. The modern-day church leadership has left today’s Christian with a sense of insufficiency of the Gospel and has instead presented an array of substitutes to include such things as relaxation exercises, breath prayers, lectio divina, yoga, and contemplative prayer all with an empty promise of delivering peace and God’s presence when in fact the Gospel is all sufficient for that purpose. Through the Gospel, Jesus opened the door of salvation, promising to live (abide) in us: “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you (Colossians 1:27) and “hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us” (1 John 3:24).

As we live by faith, we will enjoy the benefits of God’s peace. And as I mentioned earlier, when Jesus pointed out that we should take no thought for our lives, He indicated that our lives should be free of fear and worry. God wants us to strive for this goal and attain it as well. Jesus then ended His statements with the clause, “O ye of little faith” (Matthew 6:30). In other words, our freedom from fear and worry are only available to us as we allow our faith and trust in the Lord to grow. A perfect example of this is where Jesus, while walking on the water, welcomed Peter to come out and meet Him. Peter, whose life was a mixture of self-confidence and faith, was OK as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, but as he turned his eyes to the wind and the waves, that confidence soon left him. It was the same self-confidence that led him to tell Jesus that he would never deny Him only to be dashed later, causing him to weep bitterly. But it was a good thing for Peter that his self-confidence was so utterly dashed because he was later able to become a great hero of the faith as he found he had abundant and sufficient grace through Christ (even to the point where he was able to go to his death for the sake of Christ) as he put his confidence in Jesus alone. In this one illustration of meeting Jesus on the water, we find the secret of faith that enabled Peter to walk in an abiding peace. Isaiah was inspired by this same kind of faith when he penned the words:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. (Isaiah 26:3-4)

In closing, if we can make ready for the future in practical ways, it would be good to do so. But, above all, we must not neglect spiritual preparedness. We will all need spiritual strength (that only God can give) to face the future. That means drawing strength from God by reading His Word. Then, it means applying that Word to our lives. My prayer is that the words of Scripture, like that from Isaiah 26 above, will be a reality for you and I; but this can only happen as we forsake the phony comforts of this life and trust the Lord to be our strength. Yes, walking through this life can be heartbreaking and terrifying at times, but as we keep our mind stayed on Him, trusting Him, we can walk forward in His peace.

The Bible says that those who trust the Lord shall not be disappointed (Psalm 34:22). As we watch the world falling apart, there really is no other option than to trust the Lord; thus, may our resolve be to trust Him as fully as we can, even though things will not always go the way we want or hope for; but we can be comforted and assured in knowing that for those who “love God” and are “called according to His purpose,” “all things work together for good” (Romans 8:28). God has His best intentions in mind for us, and He will not be prevented from accomplishing it. One thing that can give us a sense of stability and peace of mind is knowing that even though God allows evil to happen in the world, when we are “sealed” in Christ, He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5: 1-2)

Newsweek Cover Story on a New Age Perception of Heaven and God

LTRP Note: The “heaven” experience described in the cover story of the current issue of Newsweek is reminiscent of the description Warren B. Smith gives of the teachings of New Age figures Neale Donald Walsch, Marianne Williamson (A Course in Miracles), and Barbara Marx Hubbard in Smith’s book, False Christ Coming: Does Anybody Care?, which reveals the efforts by New Age leaders to re-condition humanity to accept the false christ who will one day claim to save the world. See below the Letter to the Editor in “Related Articles” and “Quotes” for more on this. As you read everything below, remember these words: “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” – Jude 3

Dear Lighthouse Trails:

Today I am writing because I thought that you might be interested in the cover page article from Newsweek titled “Heaven is Real.” It is simply another story of an after-death experience that shows itself to be another deception from Satan when a shimmering being communicates the trifold message “You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever,” “You have nothing to fear,” and “There is nothing you can do wrong.”

His description goes further, stating, “I would suggest that you couldn’t look at anything in that world at all, for the word “at” itself implies a separation that did not exist there. Everything was distinct, yet everything was also a part of everything else, like the rich and intermingled designs on a Persian carpet. . .or a butterfly’s wing.”

He goes on to say that he found God in the “pitch-black,” “immense void, completely dark, infinite in size, yet also infinitely comforting.” And “It was as if I were being born into a larger world, and the universe itself was like a giant cosmic womb.”

He concludes, “Not only is the universe defined by unity, it is also–I now know- defined by love. The universe as I experienced it in my coma is–I have come to see with both shock and joy–the same one that both Einstein and Jesus were speaking of in their (very) different ways.” And “. . . every object and event in the universe is completely woven up with every other object and event. There is no true separation.”

I just thought that you might want to read this article since this man’s experience seems to be similar to the experiences of people who meditate. It is interesting that it was the lead story in Newsweek and even has a color graphic for this article on the front cover. If you would like a copy of this article, I can scan it and send it to you.

Once again, thank you for all of your research and hard work. B.G., California

Barbara Marx Hubbard:

[Barbara Marx] Hubbard’s “Christ” [a false one] describes how planet Earth is at an evolutionary crossroads. He states that the world is about to make an evolutionary leap that will take all creation to a new level. Those who awaken to their own divinity, by aligning themselves as one with God and one with each other, will evolve. Those who continue to believe in “fear” and “separation,” rather than in “love” and “oneness,” will not evolve. Hubbard’s “Christ” claims that with his help most of mankind will choose to evolve, calling this evolutionary leap “the Planetary Birth Experience.” He refers to it as the coming time of “Planetary Pentecost.” The “birth experience” is a shared event in the future, an “Instant of Co-operation,” when everyone on the planet will be mysteriously changed in “the twinkling of an eye,” as humanity is collectively born again into a new creation. Those who evolve will actually become a new species as Homo sapiens is collectively transformed into Homo universalis, or the “Universal Humanity.” The “Universal Humanity” will live together as a community of “natural Christs” in the “New Heaven” on the “New Earth” that is the “New Jerusalem.” (Warren B. Smith from False Christ Coming: Does Anybody Care?, ch. 4)

Neale Donald Walsch:

So the first thing you have to understand—as I’ve already explained to you—is that Hitler didn’t hurt anyone. In a sense, he didn’t inflict suffering, he ended it.

I tell you this, at the moment of your death you will realize the greatest freedom, the greatest peace, the greatest joy, and the greatest love you have ever known. Shall we therefore punish Bre’r Fox for throwing Bre’r Rabbit into the briar patch? . . .

All of your life you have been told that God created you. I come now to tell you this: You are creating God.

You are your own rule-maker.

Think, speak, and act as the God You Are.

Your future is creatable. Create it as you want it.

Create the grandest version of the greatest vision you ever had about yourselves as a human race. . .

In truth, there is no such thing as a “sinner,” for no one can be sinned against—least of all Me. (from False Christ Coming: Does Anybody Care?, ch. 3, quoting Walsch from Conversations with God books – see FCC for citations)

Marianne Williamson:

To remember that you are part of God, that you are loved and lovable, is not arrogant. It’s humble. To think you are anything else is arrogant, because it implies you’re something other than a creation of God.

We are holy beings, individual cells in the body of Christ.

We are who God created us to be. We are all one, we are love itself. “Accepting the Christ” is merely a shift in self-perception.

The concept of a divine, or “Christ” mind, is the idea that, at our core, we are not just identical, but actually the same being. “There is only one begotten Son” doesn’t mean that someone else was it, and we’re not. It means we’re all it. There’s only one of us here.

“The journey to the cross should be the last “‘useless journey.’” (quotes taken from False Christ Coming: Does Anybody Care, ch. 1, cited from Marianne Williamson’s book, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles)

From A Course in Miracles (as cited in False Christ Coming by Warren B. Smith):

By accepting the Atonement for yourself, you are deciding against the belief that you can be alone, thus dispelling the idea of separation and affirming your true identification with the whole Kingdom as literally part of you. (Text, p. 131)

The full awareness of the Atonement, then, is the recognition that the separation never occurred. (Text, p. 98)

The Atonement is the final lesson he [man] need learn, for it teaches him that, never having sinned, he has no need of salvation. (Text, p. 237)

There is no sin; it has no consequence. (Workbook, p. 183)

Innocence is wisdom because it is unaware of evil, and evil does not exist. (Text, p. 38)

A Global Community – the Sign of His Coming

By Roger Oakland
(author of Faith Undone)

Over 400,000 churches have now participated in Rick Warren’s Purpose Driven program. Quite obviously, millions of Christians have bought into the idea that the details of Christ’s return are none of our business, and we must help usher in a new reformation to eradicate the global problems facing the earth. According to Rick Warren, we accomplish this only if we all work together.

This togetherness/community mindset is the same message that [occultist] Alice Bailey referred to as “right human relations” and the same one the emerging church hopes to convey to the people of the world. A personal, individual relationship with Christ is considered self-centered,6 because it doesn’t focus on the global, common good. Communal spirituality is seen as the only path to the world’s survival. Listen to today’s new reformation thinkers:

The church is only an anticipation of the full, promised community of the whole world … the church itself is not a goal of God’s creation.7—Walter Brueggemann, An Emergent Manifesto of Hope

The Church, in all its expressions—Catholic, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Protestant and many others—has 2.3 billion followers.… Let’s use the grassroots network that is already on the ground. It’s time to lay aside our prejudices and work together.8—Rick Warren, Forbes magazine

We are emerging into a new era of Christian faith as a “living color” global community. … It is immediately clear that this kind of emergence must lead to a convergence … a kind of relationship that has never before existed.9—Brian McLaren

Unfortunately, the “global community” so often spoken of in the emerging church camp is disguised language for a world-wide religious body that incorporates all belief systems. As [New Age leader] Neale Donald Walsch said, it’s a “global movement … which makes no one else wrong for the way in which they are doing it.”

The rate at which this global unity is developing should tell us that the return of Christ could very well be near. But not everyone who professes the name of Christ is going to be ready. Jesus Himself asked, “[W]hen the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). As in the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), many will not be ready when the Lord returns. Many will have fallen asleep.

Do you remember what Jesus told the disciples when they asked Him, “what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” (Matthew 24:3) He did not tell them the whole world would be experiencing a spiritual revival, turning to the Gospel. Rather he said:

Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. (Matthew 24: 4-5)

Jesus warned that in the days before He came back, there would be such a great falling away that “many” would be deceived. The word many in Greek means a vast amount or multitudes. In fact, the majority of the signs Jesus said to expect dealt with spiritual deception. He even forewarned there would be false appearances or manifestations of false Christs that would be associated with lying signs and wonders (Matthew 24:23-25).

The apostle Paul also issued Jesus’ warning about a time of deception that would dupe the whole world:

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. (II Thessalonians 2:7-11)

Notice how Satan’s deceptive plan operates. As with the temptation of Eve in the garden, he will first call into question what God has said, influencing many to reject the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, or to get lost in strange interpretations of the Bible, pulling verses out of context. Next, he will undermine the Word of God as taking second place to experience. After all, doesn’t God want everyone to be happy and to “love” all? This love typically translates into accepting everyone and their strange beliefs as well. Ultimately, deception means rejecting the truth of God’s Word for a lie all the while thinking that God is being served.

Certainly, the words of warning Paul wrote to the church at Corinth regarding Satan’s seductive plans are very relevant today:

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. (II Corinthians 11:3-4)

Many have forgotten these basic warnings found in Scripture regarding the last days when another gospel and another Jesus will be presented to a deceived world.

Two Testimonial Letters From Widows in Kenya – How Their Lives Have Changed

LTRP Note: The following is two letters from two of the Christian widows in Kenya who are part of the Bryce Homes for Children missions project that is supported by Understand the Times and Lighthouse Trails readers. We launched this project in Kenya in 2011, and because of the donations from our readers and from Understand the Times, 15 homes (with over 110 children in them) are being helped. In addition to food and other household needs, UTT has used donations to build new houses for some of these families. More are planned for 2013. If you would like to learn more or donate, please visit www.missionsfortruth.com or http://www.understandthetimes.org/missionkenya.shtml. (Donations sent through UTT are tax deductible.) By the way, one of the most exciting aspects of the work over there is the agricultural project. Currently, one of the homes, Bryce Home #12, has begun to grow and harvest their own food. In time, we hope that all of the homes will have vegetable gardens and chickens to raise.

Dear Donors,

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. First I thank the Almighty God for enabling my vernacular language be interpreted so as to communicate to you.

I therefore have appreciative information basing on my improved living standards as a widow.

Picture of Lewnida’s family when UTT and LT first met them

In order to give the whole testimony, I have to focus on my early life which was characterized by

Stress and depression:

Based on the demand of orphaned children under my custody, I had found it so hard to put bread on the table for them. Their food, if not to mention education, left me in a stressed life. I grew thin and had no hope in life.

It looked to touching to the onlookers how my family members looked thin, because of deficiencies such as marasmus and kwashiorkor [forms of malnutrition]. This was also due to the persistence starvation which I could not avoid as a widow since I lacked energy even to till the land for farming.

My children found their school life so hard at early stages of lower grade education. They found it hard to study in hunger and without key education items such as books. I became afraid as a mother since many young girls as early as age 10 begin to give in early marriages for a living because their families are poor. My younger girls could not be an exception. This is why I was afraid.

I had completely lost hope and used to think people who have breathed their last were better off than the starving living. However I fellowshipped with Pastor Achilla who helped me in prayers to press on in life by faith. He made me to know that Jesus is the hope of the hopeless.

Today I speak of a big testimony. My life has seen light and can now talk of:

My family has monthly received food including cooking fat, beans, rice, maize, sugar, etc. making my life to appear new. Glory be to our Lord Jesus

Provision of washing and bathing soap has miraculously relieved my family from health related infection such as skin diseases, parasites and cholera as well as other water born diseases. I can now wash my utensils with soap, wash my clothes and dress clean. My children have really changed hygienically.

Lewnida’s family today standing with Pastor Nelson

Improved bedding

I cannot fail to mention the kind of comfort I now find in my current bedding status. The blankets and mattresses have really changed my life. My children can now sleep soundly.

Life free from malaria infection

North Kadem Region, being a malaria zone in Kenya, posed a great health challenge but now we sleep under treated mosquito nets. My children no longer suffer from malaria due to prevention measures by the Bryce Home Project and Lighthouse Trails readers.

Improved skin care

Since I was borne, I did not know that our skin required some body oils to keep it smooth and prevent bacteria infection. I can now maintain my skin and this makes me feel a smooth flow of blood beneath the skin in my body.

I therefore urge fellow widows to remember God is the sole provider of the bread of life and those who remain in Him will never go thirsty. Keep on praying. I continue to pray for God to open more doors to LT and UTT and to have faith even that my house will be built by the Lord’s favor.

To Roger and UTT, Deborah and Dave of LT and all the readers/donors, I lack words to express my thanks but the Almighty God will tell it in your lives. Am so blessed.

MFTMay the Lord favor you to continue with such a noble task.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Donors,

Receive greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I take this God given opportunity to relay to you a thanksgiving information through this interpreted vernacular. My life as a widow with young children to take care of had been unbearable until when the UTT and LT intervened through the hand of God.

I would like to emphasize the level from which Bryce Home support project has taken me. My initial family life was characterized by:

Poor feeding due to lack of food had hit my family hard, so hard that it robbed me of my beloved younger child. The high infant mortality rate swept across the village and my family was not exceptional. The major cause has always been measles.

I could try to maintain cleanliness but the cost of soaps and detergents became a deterrent. My family clothes and utensils were therefore poorly cleaned leading to body infection and water born diseases such cholera, typhoid, etc.

Body discomfort

Our primitive family mattress (mat) indeed made me grow older than expected. I lacked comfort due to the hardness of the mat. My children could cry at intervals over night when the situation worsened.

Harsh weather conditions

The kind of house (hut) we lived in became unbearably during rainy seasons as I used to wake up at night with the children until the rain stopped. It became horrible during winter seasons, colds led us into a massive infection from Pneumonia.

Unhealthy skin

Body oils necessary to keep the skin smooth were necessities which my family could not access due to their costs.

A worthy testimony I can call it. My life has totally changed since:

Terry and her children when UTT and LT first met them

Improved nutrition

My entire family now feeds on a balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates and vitamins. At least we can now fry the food/vegetable unlike earlier on. This has made deficiency

disease a thing of the past in our lives.

Improved hygiene

The whole family can now bath, wash their clothes and utensils. Through these, skin diseases as well as water born diseases, have been kept away/prevented.

The provision of mattresses and the blankets has relieved my body and the family from a terrible fatigue of the mat. This has made the local society start viewing us as a blessed family. Glory be to God.

Quality Shelter

The house I currently owned has been plastered and I feel well protected from cold and I find life good, the wood stove chimney has been put to prevent being infected by smoke. I can now pray for other widows who are still suffering as I used to do. May God bless LT readers and UTT donors richly.

Terry standing in front of her new house – recently plastered. Pastor Achilla is standing there too.

Quality skin

The use of body oils (cosmetics) has made my skin so smooth and protect it from bacteria infection. My children too appreciate this. I do here them comment while playing. I therefore urge other widows, orphans and the less fortunate in the society to pray and pray and trust in the Lord Jesus. Sincere prayer is the key which will open a door for life.I now have FAITH in Jesus that more can be done for His glory.

May the Lord continue to favor the Roger and UTT, Deborah and Dave and LT readers to continue touching the lives of many.

School drop-out in children

Yours faithfully,

Calif Governor Signs Bill Into Law: “California Is First State to Ban Gay ‘Cure’ for Minors”

LTRP Note: The following is posted for research and informational purposes and not an endorsement of this news article.

New York Times

California has become the first state to ban the use for minors of disputed therapies to “overcome” homosexuality, a step hailed by gay rights groups across the country that say the therapies have caused dangerous emotional harm to gay and lesbian teenagers.

“This bill bans nonscientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,” Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement on Saturday after he signed the bill into law. “These practices have no basis in science or medicine, and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.”

The law, which is to take effect on Jan. 1, states that no “mental health provider” shall provide minors with therapy intended to change their sexual orientation, including efforts to “change behaviors or gender expressions, or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.” Click here to continue reading.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves. . . despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; . . . Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (from 2 Timothy 3)

“Body found in Colorado is that of missing girl Jessica Ridgeway, authorities confirm”

LTRP Note: It is a heartbreaking co-incidence that the very day Lighthouse Trails released Ret. Police Investigator Patrick Crough’s book Seducers Among Our Children, the 10-year-old girl from Colorado who went missing on October 5th, was found murdered. Perhaps more than any other time in history, children in our world are in grave danger. The continuing rise of those viewing pornography has probably been the main contributing factor to this. Couple that with the occultism so prevalent today, and you have a world where children are not safe. The chance that a child will be sexually abused before his or her 18th birthday is higher now than ever. And for some, like Jessica and some of the children Investigator Crough discusses in his book, they don’t make it to their 18th birthdays. Let us remember the children and do all we can to protect the ones who are in our care.

By NBC News staff

Updated at 6:58 p.m. ET: Police in Colorado confirmed Friday that a dismembered body they discovered earlier in the week in a suburban Denver park is that of 10-year-old schoolgirl Jessica Ridgeway, who went missing from her Westminster home a week ago.

“Our focus has changed from the search for Jessica to a mission of justice for Jessica,” Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk said. “We realize there is a predator at large in our community.” Click here to continue reading.

Follow Up Story on Newsweek Article about Heaven: Author of “Proof of Heaven” Admits to Practicing Deep Meditation

On October 10th, Lighthouse Trails posted the following: “Newsweek Cover Story on a New Age Perception of Heaven and God .” This post included a letter from one of our readers telling us about a Newsweek cover story about one man’s “near-death” experience and how this experience was very much like a New Age one. We have now learned from the same Lighthouse Trails reader that on this man’s website, he admits that he practices deep meditation exercises. The implications here are staggering.

Dr. Eben Alexander, the doctor featured on the Newsweek article, has written a book, Proof of Heaven, about his experience. The book is coming out on October 23rd. In the meantime, on his website, Dr. Alexander reveals his views and his personal use of meditation. Under the heading “Meditative Accoustics,” Dr. Alexander states:

Much of my work in meditating to achieve deep levels of consciousness since my near-death experience involves my use of meditative acoustics, initially as Hemi-Sync® audio signals [electronic mantras]. These were first elucidated by Robert A. Monroe, founder of The Monroe Institute (TMI) in Faber, Virginia, USA.

Dr. Alexander then advises how people can have the same deep meditation experiences that he is having:

[I]f you are interested in pursuing such deep meditation, I recommend you take a 2-day Outreach Course (offered by TMI-trained personnel around the world) or take the introductory 6-day Gateway Voyage Course at TMI, or at one of their centers around the world. You will gain far more by training with a credentialed TMI facilitator.

The significance of this is that millions of people will read about this man’s mystical experience through Newsweek and other media (Yahoo News is now reporting on the story) and could be introduced to eastern meditation techniques, and begin practicing them in order to have a similar “heaven” experience that Dr. Alexander had. No doubt, Dr. Alexander will be seen as a credible source: he has taught at Harvard University and has a reputation as a respected neurosurgeon. And according to the Yahoo News article, Dr. Alexander calls himself a Christian, which means even unsuspecting Christians could see him as a credible source.

To better understand the nature of what Dr. Alexander is recommending, a brief look at The Monroe Institute will shed some light. According to The Monroe Institute’s website, its mission is to see “The Global Awakening of Humanity.” In addition, the website states:

The Monroe Institute serves as the core of a research affiliation investigating the evolution of human consciousness and making related information available to the public. The Monroe Institute also provides experiential education programs facilitating the personal exploration of human consciousness. Over the last 30+ years, thousands of people have attended the Institute’s residential and outreach programs, and millions have benefited from our educational materials.

The Monroe Institute offers an array of methods and practices to facilitate entering altered states of consciousness. Their educational programs” include yoga, out-of-body experiences, energy healing (e.g. Reiki) and other eastern meditation practices. One of the resources offered by the Institute is “Chakra Meditation with Hemi-Sync” (Hemi-Sync is meditation induced by sounds). At least one of the facilitators of the Institute is experienced in “kundalini yoga,” Reiki, and Buddhism. Listed as a “Friend” of the Institute is the Edgar Cayce Association of Research and Development (Let Us Reason ministries has some excellent information on the occultic background of Edgar Cayce.)

Essentially, while Dr. Alexander and The Monroe Institute claim that their mystical experiences are grounded in scientific and medical research, what they are actually offering is nothing other than New Age/Eastern meditation, no different than what a Hindu or Buddhist guru would teach. Research analyst Ray Yungen explains how this is done:

“In the last [few decades], many groups and individuals have come forward with various psycho-technologies for maximizing personal growth and human potential—this potential being in the higher self. New Agers understand that metaphysics must be presented in a way which will attract the greatest number of people—the advantage being that those who might reject any perceived attempts to slip them religion of any kind, would find the idea of growth techniques acceptable. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi did this with his Transcendental Meditation program emphasizing “the Science of Creative Intelligence” rather than mantra yoga, which is what it really is. Others have promoted scientific sounding terms like alpha state awareness or intuition development, which are just imaginative names for meditation.

“The advantage New Agers have in enacting significant change in our society is evident in the following quote:

Metaphysics can be taught in highly religious terms, or it can be taught as a pure science, without any religious connotations whatsoever.1

“When metaphysics is presented as a science, it is possible for a person to not be aware of its spiritual influence. Many people now coming into direct contact with the Ancient Wisdom do not realize nor understand what it’s all about. They may be told it concerns the latest findings on human development, since many times the people presenting it do not want them to know its true nature. The goal is to merge these practices into society so they will be considered normal and acceptable.” (Yungen, For Many Shall Come in My Name, pp. 38-39)

On an October 11th Twitter post, Dr. Alexander told his followers that he hoped to present a copy of his book to the Dalai Lama that day. No doubt, the Dalai Lama would very much resonate with the book Proof of Heaven. Sadly Dr. Alexander believes his “angel of light” whom he saw during his near-death experience was from Heaven, when in fact, the Bible warns us that Satan’s ministers come as “angels of light” deceiving many. And in these dark occultic days prior to Christ’s return, the stage is being set to usher in a world leader who will eventually require humanity to worship him. What tool is Satan using to draw humanity toward this anti-christ? It is meditation, for it is in the meditative state that man comes to believe God dwells in everything and in everyone (no need any longer for a Savior, having changed Jesus from a Savior to a model). And as meditation (through Yoga, Reiki, contemplative prayer, spiritual formation, etc.) is fast becoming the norm throughout the world, with even the Christian church now jumping on board, the “day of the Lord” is fast approaching, and most are completely oblivious to what is happening. But God will not be mocked, and while Satan’s efforts to obtain God’s glory for himself will not diminish until the end, God, the Creator of everything, will prevail. And the sacrifice on the Cross by His Son, Jesus Christ, will not be in vain, and He will redeem all “who call upon the name of the Lord” through faith by His grace. But those who stand proudly declaring their own “divinity” will be lost. Thus, as Christian believers, let us not grow weary in declaring and defending the Gospel message to the lost while it is still day.

For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low . . . And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. (Isaiah 2: 12,17)

Being Encouraged in God’s Word: Facing the Unexpected

By Maria Kneas
(an excerpt from Maria’s book, Strength For Tough Times, LT, 2010)

The Apostle Paul wrote nearly a fourth of the New Testament. He had amazing revelations about God. Much of our theology is based on his writings. Yet he said:

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. (1 Corinthians 13:9)

Paul includes himself among those who only know “in part.” If the Apostle Paul only knew in part, then no church, no denomination, and no individual has all the answers. All of us have areas where our understanding is limited.

What will we do if things don’t make sense to us? Will we become offended with God and abandon our faith? There was a time when many of Jesus’ followers became offended with Him and left Him. The twelve Apostles were troubled, but they were loyal and remained:

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. (John 6:66-69)

There was a time when King Nebuchadnezzar commanded Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to bow down and worship a huge golden idol. If they refused, then they would be thrown into a fiery furnace. They answered the king:

If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. (Daniel 3:17-18)

What will we do if the unthinkable happens? Will we be faithful to God no matter what, or will we only be faithful if things work out the way that we think they should? The Apostle Paul said:

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. (2 Timothy 1:12, emphasis added)

Notice that Paul said “whom” (a person), not “what” (theology, understanding, Scripture interpretation, etc.) Paul’s primary confidence was in the person, Jesus Christ. And that is where our primary confidence needs to be. The Bible says:

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)

This says that we can expect to have to face at least one “evil day.” You may know people who have had to face a number of them. But even though that time may be incredibly difficult, God will enable us to stand if we cooperate with Him. The apostle Paul said:

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13)

According to Jesus, tribulation is a normal part of life. It is to be expected. The important thing is that we can trust Jesus to get us through it. The Bible tells us:

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the Lord, and depart from evil. (Proverbs 3:5-7)

What if something happens to us which doesn’t make sense to us? What if it seems to be contrary to what we were taught by our teachers, or pastor, or our Study Bible notes? What will we do?

Will we call God a liar? Or will we say that evidently our teachers didn’t fully understand (or adequately explain) that issue? Will we become bitter against God? Or will we choose to trust Him? Will we turn away from God? Or will we turn to Him for strength and comfort and wisdom?

God promised to make everything work out for our good if we love Him (Romans 8:28). When the pain and the tears come, will we trust God to bring good out of our situation?

We can ask God to increase our trust in Him and our love for Him. We can ask Him to make us faithful. We can ask Him to enable us to stand with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—to be determined to be faithful to our God no matter what happens to us and the people we love.

The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet. (Habakkuk 3:19)

Seducers Among Our Children, Our New Book on Child Sexual Abuse, Back From Press!

Today’s children are at high risk of becoming victims of sexual abuse—learn how you can protect your children from the predators who will try to seduce them.

Seducers Among Our Children, the latest Lighthouse Trails release, is now available. Written by retired investigative police sergeant, Patrick Crough, the book is a handbook for parents on how to protect their children from sexual predators.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Countless numbers of children will be sexually abused by the time they reach their 18th birthday. Sadly, most parents won’t even see it coming. They don’t realize that sexual predators of children are often friendly, helpful, and attentive, drawing in a child, not by force but rather through enticing seduction.

Seducers Among Our Children is the personal perspective of an investigative sergeant who knows first hand the inner workings and methods used by sexual predators. This book offers a practical, simple presentation of how child predators operate in today’s society. It will educate concerned parents and guardians about how to recognize when a child predator is in their midst, how to protect children from predators, how to recognize if a child has already been offended by a predator, and what to do if a child discloses he or she has been offended by a predator. For the adult reader who was sexually molested as a child, this book may assist you in making some sense out of what happened and help you understand it wasn’t your fault.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Retired Police Investigator Patrick Crough has thirty years of law enforcement experience, including twenty years as a Major Crimes Investigator and Hostage Negotiator with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Rochester, New York. He and his colleagues in the Major Crimes Unit investigated murders and other reported homicides, suspicious deaths, physical and sexual assaults, crimes against children, police-involved shootings, and conducted covert special investigations. He is also the author of Chronicles of a Rochester Major Crimes Detective: Confronting Evil and Pursuing Truth. Patrick is married with three grown children and two grandchildren. Today, he is in full-time ministry with Millstone Justice, a non-profit, child advocacy group.
