Turning to Fables

By Mary Danielsen

While many in the church seem to have fallen asleep at their post and have ceased to “watch therefore,”
they seem to have plenty of time and attention to be distracted by “heaps of teachers” out there who are
more than happy to tell them what they want to hear.

The Bible tells us that those who are really not lovers of the truth after all will “turn their ears away” from
sound doctrine. This is a conscious decision on their part combined with stopped up ears that no longer
endure enduring. Then they fill that spiritual void up with fables, such as bestselling book and film The
Shack
. The definitive fictional fable of our time, it is devoid of even the atonement and boldly goes into
the heresy of universalism, reflecting a complete lack of fear of the Lord and remaking God into man’s
image.

That word, “fables,” is translated “narrative,” which is one of the key words used by emergent
adherents as they “reframe” the Gospel into “relevant” social-justice causes. I have noticed how the enemy
doesn’t just take away from God’s Word, he keeps everyone busy with the shiny new verbal bling so they
don’t see the holes in their theology, thinking that they are moving forward with something new and
improved, making the old path look rutted and hopelessly outdated. The NAR (New Apostolic
Reformation
) movement is the champion of nonsense “Christian-ese” designed to cover up the fact that
they are forcing a gospel of me-centered prosperity on potential “apostles” of the end times. They major in
endless fables that are cranked out daily by those who claim we can have everything we want at the
command of our words. If that were true, all those prosperity adherents and advocates would be rich and ageless, but lo, only the lead teachers of such gobbledegook are the rich ones—who will leave their fortunes for another.

See to it that no one deceives you. Matthew 24:4

“Wokeness Now Indoctrinating Your Kids Through Kellogg’s Breakfast Cereal”

By Olivia Cavallaro
Christianity Daily (not affiliated with Christianity Today
)

Just six days ago, Kellogg’s limited edution “Together with Pride” cereal hit store shelves all over the U.S. painting them purple to signify the company’s latest collaboration with GLAAD or the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation media monitoring organization.

The purple-themed breakfast cereal box comes with the tagline, “boxes are for cereal, not people,” which encourages kids and kids at heart to explore one’s identity. But not all people are happy with this new initiative.

The Western Journal, via WND, accused Kellogg of selling “moral rot and perversion” to children whose households have the brand’s products as staples. The accusation is that Kellogg’s has “sexualized its cereal box” with this new initiative that aims to “create opportunities for homes and families to have conversations about the importance of acceptance, compassion and understanding, especially when it comes to LGBTQ+ youth,” as explained by GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. Click here to continue reading.

“Judge Says Biden Admin. Can Force Christian Colleges to Change LGBT Policies”

LTRJ Note: The following is posted for informational and research purposes. This article is an example of how Christian groups (colleges, churches, etc.) that are 501 (c) 3 (non-profits) are going to be facing some very touch decisions ahead. If they don’t go along with the government’s mandates on LGBT (and other issues), they will end up being penalized and eventually losing their non-profit status. So many Christian groups are so dependent on that status that they may not financially survive without it.

Michael Foust
ChristianHeadlines.com

On Wednesday, a federal judge denied a Christian college’s request to block enforcement of a new Biden administration rule that the school says will force it to open dorms and showers to students who identify as the opposite sex.

At issue is a new directive by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in entities covered by the Fair Housing Act. That includes College of the Ozarks, a Christian school located in Springfield, Mo., which sued the Biden administration in April and sought an injunction blocking the rule. The directive was issued in accordance with an LGBT-themed executive order by President Biden.

But on Wednesday, Judge Roseann Ketchmark denied the request for an injunction after hearing arguments from the college and the administration. She was nominated by President Obama. Click here to continue reading.

Letter to the Editor: Concerned For Friend Who Now Believes Strange Lies Over the Truth
Dear Lighthouse Trails:

I have a good friend who has been a solid believer in Jesus Christ of the Bible.  In the past several months he has gotten involved in all the Q anon information, which seemed to be his first step off the path down a lot of dark rabbit holes. He is highly intelligent, an engineer who has worked for IBM for over 30 years.  He has been a devoted student of the Word.  Now, he seems to have gotten in a place where he no longer knows what to believe about the Bible. He believes it’s true but questions whether some of it could have been corrupted by Satan.  He questions whether the serpent in Genesis 3 is actually Jesus.  He thinks now he is a Jew and the Jews in Israel are not really Jews at all.  He thinks people who are dead, such as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Rush Limbaugh, are really alive and people who are alive, such as Hilary Clinton, Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, are really dead, and someone is playing as their body double.  He now questions whether the Holocaust really happened. He is almost convinced the earth is flat.  He questions reincarnation, thinking it might be true.

What he is willing to consider as possible truth goes on and on into the realm of absurdity. He originally got involved with this because he was trying to find answers to the Trump election and all the cheating that went on there. It appears there is some truth in what he reads, but a lot of it sounds very dark, New Age, and occultic.

I would really like some help in trying to guide my friend because I am afraid he is going in a very dangerous direction. He is very resistant to anything I say and thinks he is just trying to figure everything out and is willing to put everything on the table to figure out if it’s true or not.  He says he doesn’t know what to believe anymore, but insists he is still very much intact of his core beliefs.

Sincerely and deeply concerned, Mary (not real name)

Why Doesn’t God Stop All the Trouble in the World?
By Tony Pearce
Light for the Last Days Ministries

Are You not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O Lord, You have appointed them for judgment; O Rock, You have marked them for correction. Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? (Habakkuk 1:12-13)

Why doesn’t God stop all the trouble in the world? God has purer eyes than to behold evil; surely, He can’t use evil people to chastise good people; that goes against God’s whole character. He’s got to be on the side of the good against the evil.

Yes! That is right. Well, yes, but also no. There’s a time when God will allow the wicked to chastise the good for His purposes, to bring them to Himself, and He says, you have appointed them for judgment . . . You have marked them for correction, which is true.

But He says we shall not die, which is also true. God is going to bring them through this.

There’s a kind of idea that, somehow, God shouldn’t allow this to happen because, as Habakkuksays, God is too pure to behold evil, surely He can’t use the bad guys against the good guys.

Actually, that’s not necessarily the case. Otherwise, how do we explain evil people coming to power throughout the Earth?

There has always been this battle between God and evil, God and Satan; and God allows Satan a certain amount of freedom to act. God is going to have His way ultimately in bringing Satan down, but in the meantime, we have to live in a world in which evil often triumphs over the good; and we have to learn how to live with it.

But the prophet asks, how can God hold His tongue when the wicked devours a person more righteous than he? Surely this is against Your will, surely, you’ve got to do something to save us. You can’t let the wicked devour the righteous; you can’t favor a wicked pagan people over your covenant people, over Israel.

And so, Habakkuk says he’ll see what God has to say. In chapter 2 verse 1, he then says:

I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.

Habakkuk admits: Okay, maybe I do need a bit of correction on this. Maybe I’ll just see what God has to say. And he recognized he may have gotten it wrong. He says he’ll wait and see what God has to say about it. He’ll wait and see how God will use these events. He asks Him what will be His answer.

There are times also, when we need to ask ourselves and ask God: Have we got it right on everything?

I need to do that myself, and we need to be humble and recognize that there may be things which God actually wants to correct in us on how we view things. And we need to recognize that we don’t have everything sorted out ourselves. Even if, like me, you’ve studied the Bible for 50 years and you think you’ve got it all figured out.

Maybe there are things which we need to see that God may want to change in us. And God continually wants to change things in us. He wants us to understand Him truly.

Habakkuk wanted to see how God would answer when he was corrected. He wanted to see what God was going to say to him and how God would use these events.

Now, he’s asking Him and we see what He will answer. As I said, we need to be ready for God to correct us, to make us see what is true and what is not true.

In verses 2 to 4, in chapter 2, the Lord answers:

And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

God says to Habakkuk: write down the vision; make it clear so people can read it and understand it. Put it on a billboard if you like so people can walk by and see what it is, what it has to say . . . so they can see what’s going to come and act in response to it. God says this is going to come for the appointed time. It will surely come. He says: whether you want like it or not, this is going to happen.

And there are things which we don’t like, and we think we can stop from happening. But, actually, they’re going to happen whether we like it or not.

There are two main responses here: that of the proud, and that of the just.

It says the soul of the proud is not upright in him, but the just shall live by his faith.

This tells us there are two ways in which we’re going to respond to the Word of the Lord:

1. The proud refuse the Word of the Lord; they refuse to repent of their sins and to believe in the Lord.

  • They refuse to see the signs; they refuse to heed the prophetic word.
  • They carry on without God.
  • They say we’ve got it all figured out, we’ll trust in our own righteousness.
  • We can work it out, we’re clever people we know what to do and we can work it out without God.

Basically, the spirit of the world today is that we can work it out without God.

  • We don’t need God; ‘we don’t need Him telling us that we need to repent and believe the Gospel.
  • We don’t need Him telling us that Jesus is coming again: that’s all a load of baloney!
  • We’re going to sort it out.
  • We’re strong; we know what to do.

And God says that the proud are actually going to be brought down because they don’t sort it out, and the vision will happen.

What will happen is going to happen, and God has written about it in his Word. Therefore, if it’s written in the Word of God, it’s going to happen whether we like it or not.

2. Then He says: the just shall live by faith. Those who do repent (acknowledge their sinfulness and turn toward God) and believe will and have a true faith in God; they will live.

They may suffer outwardly, but they will have the life of God in them which will enable them to come through the trials and tribulations with faith and victory.

And when you go to the Book of Daniel, you see there that you have people who had faith, who were justified, who believed in God, and who, in the Babylonian situation, had the victory.

They demonstrated also that their faith was going to stand and that they were to stand against all of the forces which were coming against them.

God says to those who have faith today that:

  • If you have Me in you, you have the Holy Spirit within you.
  • You have the God who made the Heavens and the Earth within you.
  • You have Jesus who died on the cross and rose from the dead within you.
  • You have the Holy Spirit within you.
  • You have the power of God within you and greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

Therefore, if you have any sense, if you have any understanding of the situation which we’re in this present day—always in this world because we’re always facing trouble and death—if you have any sense, you’re going to believe the Gospel and believe in Jesus and have the Holy Spirit within you.

The just shall live by faith, of course, is a verse which is quoted three times in the New Testament. The most famous one is in Romans chapter 1 verses 16-17 where it says:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

There is a way in which every person on the face of the Earth can be justified with God: By having faith in God through Jesus the Messiah who makes us justified with God. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again from the dead to give us eternal life; and He promises to keep all those who trust in Him through good and bad circumstances. So, whatever happens, trust in Him.

In our time, we can see that although there is Tribulation coming, there is a hope in Jesus the Messiah.

We can tell people about this hope in Jesus; we can tell people there is a way out of the crisis which is coming on the Earth.

In Salvation we have the promise of God to keep us.

Revelation chapter 3 verses 10-11 says:

Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

A promise is there, of God, to keep you from the hour of trial which will come upon the whole world. That hour of trial does seem to represent the Tribulation time which is coming to test those who dwell on the Earth. It says, I’m coming quickly.

Jesus promises He is going to come again, to come again to save those who believe in Him. Therefore, we should hold fast what we have that no one may take our crown.

There is this issue: Does it mean “I will keep you from the hour of trial”? I will take you out of the world before the hour of trial begins? The issue of the pre-Tribulation Rapture view? Or does it mean I will keep you in the hour of trial, I’ll keep you through the hour of trial?

Personally, I favor the pre-Tribulation view. But, as it hasn’t happened yet, I should warn you that if it doesn’t happen this way and we end up going through the Tribulation, either way, we have to have Jesus in our lives. And He’s the One who’s going to keep us and help us through this time.

He’s the only help and so, write it down and read it, and believe it! And know that the just shall live by faith.

Letter to the Editor: “Christian” Professor Finds “Warm Welcome” at Wheaton College to Teach and Promote Critical Race Theory

LTRP Note: Because Wheaton College has been promoting and embracing both contemplative spirituality and emergent ideologies for many years (as Lighthouse Trails has documented), it makes perfect sense that they would now embrace the social justice, Marxist-influenced movement. They all go hand in hand (but most Christian leaders, colleges, and pastors have failed to recognize this).

Wheaton College

Dear Lighthouse Trails:

First, I wanted to thank you for your booklet, Critical Race Theory, as it is a great tool to reveal/expose the lies being promoted to unwitting evangelicals (young and old) in these days. Also, the booklet glossary S is for Social Justice is a great introduction to terms being used to propagate lies. Thank you also for your new release Color, Communism, and Common Sense as Manning Johnson’s story is a powerful example of how God can open up a precious man’s eyes, to the truth of the Bible and the Gospel, exposing the lies of the world/Satan.

Second, I wanted to let you know that a current Wheaton College professor is promoting Critical Race Theory (CRT). His name is Nathan Cartagena, assistant professor of philosophy at Wheaton College.

In an April 28, 2021 interview with Jim Wallis’ Sojourners Magazine, he spoke with Sojourner’s Magazine assistant news editor Mitchell Atencio, about his views andongoing relationship with Critical Race Theory (CRT).

Below are relevant quotes from the April 28, 2021 interview/”conversation” —
(for full interview see the following link: https://sojo.net/articles/why-nathan-cartagena-teaches-critical-race-theory-evangelicals)

———————————————————————————

Nathan Cartagena: When I was applying for positions to teach, I wanted to teach at smaller, Christian, liberal arts schools, because I see myself first as a churchman. I want to edify the church through distinctively Christian modes of pedagogy. I didn’t want to have to check my trinitarian theology at the door when I’m trying to do race scholarship or when I’m trying to do distinctive things in moral philosophy.

When I interviewed at Wheaton the very first time, my guest lecture was on an essay about critical race theory by Tommy J. Curry. I wanted to see: Is this a place that would welcome such reflection? I received a warm welcome from the students, my department, etc., so I thought “OK, this is a place where I can do this.” I taught a reading group my first year at Wheaton that involved one of the important texts in the critical race theory movement, Faces at the Bottom of the Well by Derrick Bell. The following year I asked if I could teach a half-semester class on critical race theory — I got a full thumbs up.

Did you notice what Nathan Cartagena had to say about interviewing at Wheaton College, regarding whether they welcomed his guest lecture on critical race theory? He said he “received a WARM WELCOME from the students, my department (philosophy), etc.”

Then, he got a “thumbs up” to teach a half-semester class on critical race theory using an important text by Derrick Bell. Who is Derrick Bell (who died in 2011)? The African-American lawyer, professor, and activist, who helped develop Critical Race Theory (CRT).

May the Lord have mercy on Wheaton College students who take that class, and who are being influenced, and will be influenced by Professor Cartagena. May the Lord have mercy on Wheaton College for rolling out a “warm welcome” red carpet for their newest Associate Professor of Philosophy…

The Lord is faithful to open up deceived eyes to His truth and love,
L. Sharp

“Facebook Whistleblower Leaks ‘Vaccine Hesitancy’ Censorship Documents”

LTRP Note: The following is posted for informational and research purposes.

By Isabel van Brugen
The Epoch Times

A Facebook whistleblower has leaked documents that appear to expose the tech giant’s plans to censor content that show COVID-19 “vaccine hesitancy.”

Whistleblower Morgan Kahmann, a former data center technician for Facebook, revealed his identity in an interview on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” after first coming forward to the investigative journalism non-profit Project Veritas with the internal documents.

He says the company’s documents detail a plan to curb “vaccine hesitancy” on a global scale.

Kahmann, who says he has since been suspended by the company for coming forward, told Carlson on Thursday night that content that the company deems to show hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccines are flagged by its algorithms and assigned a “score” to determine whether it should be removed. Click here to continue reading.

Letter to the Editor: Dismayed With a Calvary Chapel Church Pushing Calvinism Through New City Catechism
LTRJ Note: We are posting this letter to the editor, not as a criticism of all Calvary Chapel churches, but to express our deep concern that an increasing number of Calvary Chapels are turning to Calvinism, something their founder would be totally opposed to.

Dear Lighthouse Trails:

I am currently visiting a Calvary Chapel church. I was alarmed on one of my visits to see on their information table a book called The New City Catechism: 52 Questions and Answers for Our Hearts and Minds. I am under the impression that this is sourced to Calvinist theology [LTRP note: This is true.]

When I visited the church again today, I looked for the book, The New City Catechism, but it wasn’t on the table this time. So I inquired, and they offered me one at no charge; no charge for anyone. They commented what a great book it was for new believers and as for a devotional. I kept my thoughts to myself and thanked them.

So I came home and read it—with dismay. I did not realize that Tim Keller along with The Gospel Coalition were the publishers. Both big red flags. So I pulled from my shelves the many books I have, from you, and others, to refresh me. So disturbing.

Then I read through the book; it is a quick read.

Some questions were glaring, if you are looking for it.

QUESTION 48: WHAT IS THE CHURCH?

Answer:  “God chooses and preserves for Himself a community elected for eternal life.” (bold mine)

QUESTION 27: ARE ALL PEOPLE, JUST AS THEY WERE LOST THROUGH ADAM, SAVED THROUGH CHRIST?

Answer: “No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless God in his mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining the effects of sin and enabling works of culture for human well-being.”

Now what in the world does that mean???

QUESTION 44: What is baptism:

Answer:  “Baptism is the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit; it signifies and seals our adoption into Christ, our cleansing from sin, and our commitment to belong to the Lord and to his church”

NOTHING about mode of baptism or being born again, etc. As you know, most Calvinists believe in infant baptism.

The introduction states the catechism is based on The Westminster Catechism (i.e., Calvinism). I also found the instructions very disturbing; they want you to memorize every question and memorize every answer. But they mention nothingabout memorizing the Word of God itself!

This particular Calvary Chapel is a fairly new church plant. And it was mentioned yesterday that the pastor is the second pastor – and sent from the main church. I have lots of problems with the main church but was hoping for better things. I think I might be hoping in vain. But I really like the people, and they do seem so sincere for the Lord. But you can also be sincerely deceived.

There is almost no choice: stay home or go where there is false teaching. And speak up? Until they don’t want you around anymore? Or maybe they will hear the concerns?

Anna

Letter to the Editor: Concerned About Lighthouse Trails Upcoming Book Challenging Calvinism

Francesco and Rosa Madiai – the Italian Christian Prisoners
LTRP Note: The following story if from John Shaw Anderson’s book, Heroes of the Faith in Modern Italy (first published in 1914*). Lighthouse Trails decided to add this book to our collection of resources as we saw the immense value of these true stories of courageous men and women in Italy in the late 1800s, when to leave the Roman Catholic Church after becoming born again in Jesus Christ meant sure persecution. We pray that such stories, when read, will increase the reader’s courage to seek out and stand for truth no matter the cost.

When God formed man’s companion out of his breast, He showed His lofty purpose which assigns to her the dominion of the kind affections.—Giusti.

MANY illustrious names in the history of the Gospel testimony would have remained unknown, buried in oblivion but for the grace which made them great. They had no natural qualities that raised them above their fellows, but they received light from Heaven, and they so let their light shine before men, that they saw their good works, and glorified their Father Who is in Heaven. Probably no one would ever have heard of this humble and holy couple had they not been willing to suffer for Christ’s sake, leaving a testimony which has encouraged the faith of many.

The history of the Gospel mission contains pages of brilliant active service for Christ: pioneering enterprise and preaching testimony, but it must not omit the less active, but not less effective service of Christian suffering. “If anyone suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name.”

It is now purposed to introduce to the reader some Italian Christian women whose lives form bright pages in the history of the Church in Italy. In doing so we are glad of the transition afforded by the pathetic story of this noble husband and wife. Rosa’s light will not shine less brightly by the side of Francesco’s. He was a Tuscan by birth, she a Roman. He became a courier, trusted and esteemed by all who employed his confidential service He accompanied several distinguished families to England, Germany and America. Rosa, a young Roman maiden, came to London as a domestic servant in a very high family. Her pleasing manner and exemplary conduct so endeared her to that Christian household, that her return to Italy caused it great sorrow.

When a youth Francesco had an experience which shook his confidence in the priests. He had been ill, and his doctor had ordered him meat every day. It was Lent, and he went to confess. Among other details he confessed that he had eaten meat during Lent, but by the doctor’s orders. His confessor dismissed him with a scathing look and the sentence: “You are doomed in soul and body.” With anger the door was shut in his face, and for nineteen years poor Francesco, to use his own words, “did not know to what religion he belonged.”

Rosa was a most devout Roman Catholic, and made it clear in the household in which she served that she would rather leave it, dear as it was to her, than hear in it a word against her religion.

While in America Francesco received a copy of the Bible in English, and began to read it. When he returned to Italy he continued to read a portion daily as it was the only source of true satisfaction he could find. Through one of the links in God’s golden chain of grace, Francesco and Rosa entered the same service in an upper class English household. In their spare time, instead of reading novels, Francesco asked Rosa to read to him a chapter of the English Bible, as she was freer than he was in English. They then conversed about it, and Rosa proved not only the better reader, but the clearer expounder of the Holy Scriptures. Their friendship grew into love; they were married and returned to Italy as happy husband and wife.

They were still nominally Roman Catholic, having made no public profession of the Gospel. Their conversion to God had in no measure depended upon human influence. But when the Lord opened their hearts ” to give heed unto the things ” which they read in His Word, they found that their new life required new environments, and that salvation involved separation, and they left the Romish communion with which they felt they had nothing in common.

Conversion was a great reality to them. As “new creatures,” they were “in Christ,” and they were married ” in the Lord.” Like many, when “born again “they had not much light, but they had life. Christ was now their life, and He had promised to be their light. “He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). Francesco had accepted Christ for himself and Rosa for herself: their faith was individual, personal: each had heard and obeyed the Word: “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light” (Eph. 5:14).

Francesco and Rosa had now furnished a number of rooms which they let to visitors and were leading a peaceful and happy Christian life. Their travels had made their manners polite and pleasing, and under these was a noble and generous character. Their Gospel testimony was not that of the flame but of the flower, which proves its existence by its beauty and fragrance. Yet this humble, holy, and happy couple became the object of Rome’s cruel inquisition and persecution! Francesco and Rosa Madiai were arrested and charged with “impiety,” i.e., propagating heresy! In endeavoring to imagine a reason for such an unreasonable charge, the only conclusion is that the Papacy in Italy considered its prey helpless, defenseless, and at the same time a salutary object lesson that might deter others wandering from her fold. The enemy found it very difficult to account for the “cause” of their conversion, for had they “changed their religion “with self-interest in view, they would not have resisted, as they did, all the influences with which they were surrounded in England and America.

Francesco and Rosa were arrested on the 17th of August, 1851 and imprisoned in separate, damp, and dismal cells for ten months before even being tried! Only once in those long, dark months were they allowed to see each other, and then only for a few minutes in the presence of their keepers. Francesco had learned Psa. 116 in English verse and found comfort in singing it in prison, “and the prisoners heard him,” although they could not understand the language as he raised his praise to God:

At first no advocate could be found to defend Francesco and Rosa. Had they been charged with even the vilest crimes which stain our race, specialists in penal law would have undertaken “the defense”; but “the shame of the cross ” proved too great an undertaking for the Italian forum. At last, one brave “penalist “ventured to defend the two pious prisoners charged with “impiety.” We have read his elaborate and noble defense, printed and published in a volume which ranks among the finest specimens of oratory delivered in the Italian law courts. It is a masterpiece on the question of liberty of conscience and an unanswerable indictment against the inquisition of Rome. That noble advocate of justice was “counseled” not to defend the two “unbelievers,” as he might risk his position by doing so. Why, then, did he undertake a task so fraught with peril for his own future. Was he a Protestant I No. Did he hope for gain? No. What then? He tells us in the closing words of his memorable defense: “I was counseled not to plead the cause of two unbelievers. I declare that such a counsel filled me with disgust. Even had I ran in the face of danger I would have defied it. The sacred office of my cause, the breastplate of conscience, the power of truth would have made me bold. So I replied to that counsel with a protest such as I felt I owed to the order of the bench. I have not come to implore your indulgence for murderers or thieves, who even have the right to be pleaded for. I have come to refute a vain and unjust accusation, an accusation which would violate the sacredness of conscience, man’s relationship to God and the solution of the most solemn problem which is reserved for us beyond this life. I have come to defend two individuals, as pious, upright and honest as ever lived, pious, upright and honest even according to the confession of those who have studiously sought to harm them.”

The “defense “of Francesco and Rosa proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that they were not guilty of the imputed “impiety” of any propaganda, but that their Christian testimony was simply and solely that of the true Christian life. But Rome was behind that trial, and its decree which had kept those innocent followers of Christ ten months in cruel imprisonment before their trial, condemned Francesco to four years and eight months, and Rosa to three years and ten months’ penal servitude!

The conduct of the two prisoners of Christ during their trial was most exemplary and caused the sympathy of even their enemies to show itself more than once. The following is a letter written by Rosa to her husband just after the trial and before the sentence was made known to her: “7th June, 1852.

“My dear husband, ” You know how I have always loved you, but now I ought to love you still more, for we have fought together the battle of the Great King, in which we have been smitten down yet not destroyed.’ I hope that through the merits of Christ, God our Father has accepted our testimony, and that He will give us grace to drink with thanksgiving to its last drop the bitter cup which He has prepared for us.

“My good husband, what is our life? A day, a day of sorrow? Yesterday we were young, today we are old; yet we can say with the aged Simeon: Now lettest Thou Thy servant depart O Lord, according to Thy Word, in peace, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation.’

“Be of good courage, my beloved, for we know by the Holy Spirit that Jesus Himself, Who was shamefully treated, downtrodden and despised, is our Savior, and that we by His divine light and power are called to defend the blessed cross on which He died for us, and have part now in His shame to share soon His glory. Fear not, even though our condemnation be severe: God who loosed the chains of Peter and opened the gates of his prison, will not forget us.

“Be happy, therefore, and courageous. Let us put ourselves entirely in the hands of God. May I see you rejoicing, as by the grace of God I hope you will see me. “I embrace you with all my heart,  “Your affectionate wife,  “ROSA MADIAL”

After ten months “preliminary ” imprisonment without a trial, Francesco was taken to Volterra and Rosa to Lucca to suffer the imprisonment imposed upon them by the sentence decided before the trial!

The news of this unjust and cruel imprisonment spread to England, Holland, France, Switzerland, and Germany, and the deepest sympathy was manifested for the two Gospel prisoners in Italy; and public indignation grew so high that even a special deputation with an autograph was sent to the Tuscan Government by the Sing of Prussia. But all proved vain! The civil power was afraid of Rome.

But friends in England were not content to allow Francesco and Rosa to suffer in prison merely to gratify the papacy, and so great was the pressure brought by the British Government to bear upon the authorities in Tuscany that the prisoners of Christ were liberated from prison in March, 1853, but exiled.

Their moral and physical sufferings had meanwhile told upon their health. They had been taken from the comforts of a peaceful home to the trials of imprisonment; from the fellowship of kindred souls to the enmity of prejudiced officials; from the elevating voices of Christian communion to the debasing exclamations of the vilest inmates of the surrounding dungeons.

The sorrows of their imprisonment, however, were partially relieved by visits paid to Francesco and Rosa by kind English friends, whose influence permitted them to penetrate into those dismal dungeons. Francesco and Rosa were granted the liberty of writing to each other and to some of their friends, and their letters have been preserved and published. She wrote to her husband from the prison in Lucca, 16th August, 1852:

“My dear husband,

“At last I have received this morning the ratification of our sentence. My dear, let us ever remember the holy words of Christ: Everyone, therefore, who shall confess Me before men, him will I also confess before My Father Who is in Heaven. . . He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me.’

“These two things have been fulfilled by the strength of God Who is the support of the weak. Now there is the third: He that Both not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.’

” My dear husband, let us with adoration and thanksgiving take the cross, which the Lord in His divine wisdom is pleased to put upon us; and when we feel weak let us lay hold of the hem of His garment, for all who touched it were healed; and so we shall be strengthened by faith in Him. Let us remember His holy words to His disciples: ‘ In the world ye have tribulation, but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.’ My dear, what words of comfort for the Savior’s afflicted ones! We know that having conquered He will give strength to us to conquer in Him and with Him. The body certainly will suffer, but how many agonies our Innocent Savior suffered! He, the Innocent One for us miserable sinners! Let us remember that it is through many tribulations we enter into the Kingdom of God. Paul says: I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us-ward.’

“What we have to do, my dear, is to pray for our enemies, who are more to be pitied than we are. They are happy, but what a miserable happiness! to do harm to their fellows. The time will come when all things will be made manifest before the Supreme Judge, and then it will be seen who is right and who is wrong. The witness of a good conscience is a grand thing.

“My dear, write me soon, and let me know how you are, and tell me plainly whether you are well or ill. Try to write me every week, as this will be such a comfort to me. If your hand is shaky it does not matter: you see that I cannot write. All I want is to be able to understand your letters. In a few days I shall write to my sister. I know that it will be a terrible blow to them, but I shall say as little as possible. My dear, I am fairly well, considering the many shocks I have received: but why should I say so? How many more than I did my Savior’s sacred hand receive from the nails!

“My dear, I am afraid you will require the wisdom of Solomon to understand this letter! Let us put ourselves under the protection of God, in the sacred merits of Jesus, our only Savior. “I embrace you with my heart,  “Your affectionate wife, “ROSA MADIAI.”

Four days after, Francesco replied to his wife:

“Volterra, cell 43.
“My dear Rosa,
“You cannot imagine what pleasure I have had in seeing your few lines with your handwriting, and so it will be with you in seeing mine. You say that I am to tell you truly how I am, but Satan hinders. There are those who know truly all this, and the day is coming when all the knots will reach the comb.’ As you know I was ill for two months; but the weather now seems to be changing, and so I hope to get better; if not, God’s will be done! All I say is that if Satan has conquered my flesh, of this I am sure that my spirit belongs to Jesus.

“I left at last on Wednesday at 5 a.m. with a severe headache. I arrived at the railway station thinking to see you, but in vain! However, I saw a Frenchman with whom I had a long conversation, and told him of my afflictions and yours. Let me now ask you to be at ease, and when you write me be very prudent, and write every fortnight. So let us commit ourselves entirely to the mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I pray morning and evening for you, and for our enemies, and for all. Good-bye dear. I embrace you with my heart. “Your affectionate husband,  “FRANCESCO MADIAI.”

During their imprisonment Francesco and Rosa had several discussions with their would-be confessors and others. Some of those in which she took part have been preserved by her and published. Writing to a friend, 6th of January, 1853, she recounts a discussion she had with the confessor, which lasted two hours. We can quote only a brief portion of it:

Confessor: “Unless you hold the holiness and authority of the Papal see, you cannot be saved.”

Rosa: ” But Paul said: Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved’ (Acts 16:31). And from whom does the Pope receive such authority?”

Confessor: “From Peter, for Peter is the foundation stone of the Church.”

Rosa: “How many stones are there, one or two?”

The Confessor did not reply, and Rosa added: ” Jesus Christ said to the Pharisees: Did ye never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made the head of the corner This stone is Christ.”

The subject of her imprisonment was mentioned, and Rosa asked: ” Has the Inquisition not been done away with in our days?”

Confessor: ” The Church recalls: if that is not sufficient, it is necessary to punish to recall.”

Rosa: “A fine way to recall, punishing severely to the point of burying alive poor creatures and making them die in anger! God has given to all freedom of thought, but man would take it away.”

Confessor: “The Church has never punished anyone for thinking, but only for proselytizing. In England there are Dukes, Lords, and many others who are coming over to us, and all England will yet come over to us.”

Rosa: “I shall then believe that truly the end is at hand, for it is written that then will men turn away from the faith. I attribute my salvation only to the blood of Jesus Christ.”

During her imprisonment in Lucca, Rosa was visited on several occasions by the Archbishop. The following discussion took place on the occasion of his second visit, which she recounts: ” On the 8th of March (1853) I had a second visit from the Archbishop of Lucca, who arrived with a large suite. Only Father Pietro and the Superior entered with him: the door was closed and the others remained outside. The Archbishop . . . entering, lifted up his hands in the act of blessing me, saying: God bless you, God bless you! ‘

I went forward having in my hand the Bible open at the 85th Psalm, which my husband had sent to me. I said: “Monsignor, you could not have wished me anything more acceptable than the blessing of God, for if God blesses me I shall truly be blessed.”

Archbishop: ” However, have you forgotten your mother, your good mother in which you were born?”

Rosa: “I have no mother, Monsignor.”

Archbishop: “I mean the Church.”

Rosa: “Monsignor, I have not left the Church.”

Archbishop: ” Do you believe that Christ said to Peter: Upon this rock I will build My Church’?”

Rosa: ” Christ said to his disciples: Who say ye that I am?’ And Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered and said unto him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father Who is in Heaven. And I also say unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church.’ But who was the rock?”

This question, which remained unanswered by the Archbishop, is still the great question of the soul: “Who is the Rock?!” Rosa Madiai did not ask nor answer it merely with the verbal profession of her lips, but with the moral confession of her life. The billows of hatred and persecution had dashed against her faith, but it stood, because it was resting on the Rock, Christ Jesus.

Liberated from imprisonment, but exiled from Tuscany, Francesco and Rosa found liberty in Nice, which was then under the government of Piedmont. In 1859, Tuscany was freed from the tyrannical power which had kept her separated from a united Italy, and the two exiles of Christ returned to their beloved province. They lived a quiet and peaceable life, showing kindness even to their past enemies.

The hardships of imprisonment, however, had undermined their health, especially Francesco’s, and he died in 1868, followed three years later by his dear wife, “of whom the world was not worthy.”

Jerusalem Is a Cup of Trembling…
By Bill Randles

The burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.( Zechariah 12:1-3)

Once again events in the city of Jerusalem have erupted into world consciousness like a fire alarm in the midst of a deep sleep. Terrifying scenes of crowds of confused and frightened people running for their very lives as flash grenades explode around them. Muslims barricaded in the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple mountain, rushing to and fro as Israeli defense forces besiege them, and eventually enter the sanctuary in full riot gear.

There are also the instantaneous, angry, defiant international protests at Israeli treatment of Palestinians across the globe.

In what seemed to be a perfect storm of events, such as a National celebration of the Annexation of Jerusalem by the Jews in 1967 called “Jerusalem day,, the final Friday service of Ramadan, an Israeli court case, in which Jewish plaintiffs sued for the eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem, and the onset of a New American political administration hostile to Israel, the tensions exploded into a firestorm of violence.

The prophet Zechariah predicted that God would make Jerusalem to be a “cup of Trembling” to those who are round about her, making them to go crazy and unleashing among them self destructive impulses as a Divine judgment upon them.

Jerusalem is the most important city on Earth. God chose to “put his name there,” according to the promise God gave to King David.

And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.   1 Kings 11:36

Furthermore, it was in Jerusalem that God had his people erect a Holy House, and there God descended to inhabit that house in a cloud of Glory.

In Jerusalem also, God dealt a fatal blow to the enemy of God and of mankind, when He sent his Son to die outside of the city walls. The Earth’s most serious wound is also in Jerusalem because there is an empty Tomb, which had been used by the Messiah, and from that tomb emerged the risen Savior.

Jerusalem is also a very important city to the world’s 1.7 billion Muslims. Though Jerusalem is never mentioned by name in the Quran, Islam claims that Jerusalem is the third holiest site for Muslims.

There is one passage in the Quran which mentions a place called Al Aqsa, “the farthest place” which Muslim scholars cite to claim Jerusalem and the Temple mount as their own site. The passage is called “the Izra,” and it tells us that Mohammed rode a winged horse called “Barak” (I know, you just can’t make this stuff up), all the way to “Al Aqsa” where he ascended to Heaven and had prayer with Jesus and Moses. This is why the Mosque on the Temple must be called the “Al Aqsa Mosque.”

Every confrontation on the Temple mount is a portent of the final conflict for Israel and for all of mankind. It is ironic that this latest outburst involved a siege and assault on the Mosque. We are heading into very serious times. I hope you have made your peace with God and are ready.

The city of Jerusalem is also very important to the United Nations. It happens to be the only major world city which has been partitioned into two cities by the UN. The UN claims there are ‘two Jerusalems”; one is designated for Muslims and the other for Jews. God didn’t do this—the UN did.

A Jewish young man, who was born in Jerusalem, but was a US citizen, applied for an American passport. On the application, he was asked for the city of his birth, so he replied, Jerusalem, Israel. His passport was rejected on the grounds that officially, Jerusalem isn’t in Israel! It is a “universal city.” He sued all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States and was rejected every step along the way, for insisting the Jerusalem is in Israel.

A terrible conflict is coming, and it will break out over the issue of Jerusalem. God has a controversy with the nations of this world. Could these volatile events in Jerusalem be leading up to this? We will soon see . . . Seek the LORD while He can be found . . .

Kevin Max, a member of the Grammy award-winning Christian band DC Talk, recently stirred up controversy after he identified himself as an “exvangelical”, leading many to think he has departed from the faith.

In a tweet over the weekend, Max wrote the following, “Hello, my name is Kevin Max & I’m an #exvangelical.”

The singer added that he has been “deconstructing” his faith “for decades.”

“I’ve been deconstructing/Reconstructing/progressing/whatever you wish to call it for decades, I’ve been in the outsider/misfit/seeker club for a long time now…. thank you for welcoming me in, but I’ve always been here,” he said. Click here to continue reading.

SUPPORTING LIGHTHOUSE TRAILS: For those who would like to support Lighthouse Trails, we always appreciate both your prayers and your giving. And for those who have faithfully done that over the years, we thank you with all of our hearts. We know that some people may have the impression that Lighthouse Trails does quite well financially because we sell products that we publish and because our resources have had such a far reach; but, the truth is, it takes everything made through sales to keep Lighthouse Trails operating. Publishing, at least for small presses such as ours, is rarely a high-profit business. It would take a best seller to see that, one that the masses of people love. And because we are not just a business, but even more so a ministry, we keep our prices as low as we can, give away many resources, and have also made much of our material available for free on the research site and blog. That's not how big corporations run things as that would hurt the bottom line (profit), but we see the needs out there, and we trust God to keep us going as long as He sees fit.

We thank you in advance for seeing the value in a ministry like Lighthouse Trails and coming along side us with your prayers and support.

It is our prayer that we will faithfully be humble servants of the Lord’s work for years to come should the Lord tarry.
