LTRP Note: Former New Age followers Richard and Linda Nathan have been warning about the New Age and its influence in the world and in the church for many years. Last December, Richard passed away, leaving Linda to carry on their ministry alone. Lighthouse Trails has appreciated this couple who are the authors of The Omega Point Trilogy (3 novels based partly on their own true life experiences in the New Age). LAST ISSUE, I TALKED ABOUT HOW MUCH I MISS RICHARD’S STORYTELLING.
But I also miss being able to talk deeply with him about the issues of the day—the very issues we lived personally and explore in our novels. He possessed an unusual combination of intellectual depth, wide-ranging knowledge, emotional stability, and compassion.
After meeting Jesus Christ, he changed from a San Francisco leftist into a fervent Christian scholar—with a storyteller’s imagination. His stories explored some of the crucial spiritual and cultural issues of our time, although he also delighted in creating children’s adventures.
Richard brought an extraordinary range of personal experiences to his writing. He—
- was raised in a revolutionary family of Marxist atheists;
- knew family members who suffered from schizophrenia;
- spent years experimenting with psychedelics in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s and ’70s;
- earned degrees in psychology and biology;
- eventually earned a master’s degree in religion, specializing in church history;
- and worked for decades among the mentally ill.
Richard studied psychology and earned degrees in biology and church history. Over the years, he was also a carpenter, a certified home inspector, and, for approximately thirty years, a psychiatric assistant and behavioral health specialist in locked psychiatric units
