The Christian Media is protecting Rick Warren. Christian Today (a partner with Christian Post and Breath), in its March 11 article,“Churches Debate Rick Warren’s Purpose-Driven Model” says that Rick Warren “is stirring up controversy among congregations in the United States,” but the article doesn’t mention the detrimental reasons that some are stirred up. And the “complaints” it does mention are glazed over with praise for Purpose Driven as in this section of their article:
Amid some complaints that the popular teaching may be more “self-help” than biblical, Warren acknowledged the difficulty in balancing relevance and biblical teachings. The evangelical pastor, however, is trying to bridge what happened over 2,000 years ago to today.
This type of slanted reporting is similar to an interview done last week by ABC Dateline with Rick Warren when “complaints” were narrowed down to contemporary music and preaching styles More serious problems with Purpose Driven include: Rick Warren’s goal to bring about a new reformation that includes all religions (with his three-legged stool), his continued promotion and embracing of contemplative spirituality and the emerging church, his dominionist views as well as his disregard for biblical prophecy, the cruel treatment by Purpose Driven pastors towards those who do not go along with the program, and Warren’s connections to and influence by New Age sympathizers like Ken Blanchard and Robert Schuller.
