MINNEAPOLIS — A freeway bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis has collapsed, sending many cars into the water.
Police were telling people to leave the area amidst fears of several burning vehicles in the area. A firefighter on the scene said everybody from the north side of the bridge was pulled from the scene alive and that at least 100 vehicles were involved in the accident.
A May 2006 evaluation of the bridge recommended monitoring of “fatigue cracking” on the bridge’s girders. The bridge was undergoing a deck rehabilitation at the time of the accident.
Tons of concrete have collapsed and people are injured. Survivors are being carried up the riverbank.Click here to read more and watch live coverage.
