The Moody alumni website The Broken Twig is back online with “An Open Letter to the Board.” The Broken Twig had taken itself offline after the recent resignation of now-former Moody president Paul Nyquist. But after apparently realizing that Moody was still in denial about the problems going on there, The Broken Twig blog returned. Lighthouse Trails wrote  “A Note About MBI Alumni Website – The Broken Twig” wondering why the site disappeared and more importantly sharing our concerns that the “bigger picture” going on at Moody (the influence of contemplative/spiritual formation that is not being addressed). No one at Moody seems to understand that they are just putting band-aids on a cut that needs a lot more than a quick fix.

For instance, the interim president that Moody chose is Greg Thornton.  He has been the senior vice president of media at Moody Bible Institute since 1981 (37 years). He is also an elder at Erwin Lutzer’s Moody Church. He graduated from Moody in 1981 with a BA in Bible and Theology and from the Catholic Jesuit school Loyola University in 1986 with an MBA (Erwin Lutzer also graduated from Loyola as is stated on his website). As the Vice President of Media at MBI for so many years, we will assume that Mr. Thornton is not aware of the dangers of the spiritual formation/contemplative/emergent church movement because the MBI media (radio) has been promoting numerous figures from that movement for several years. As the V.P. of the media department, it only stands to reason that he is either unaware of what that movement is and who promotes it or (hopefully not) he has no problem with Moody radio promoting it. Either way, Moody Bible Institute’s serious issues are not going to get resolved anytime soon, especially if no one is willing to talk about them.

  1. Interesting warning – I’ll avoid any Catholic based thinking in future. Actually I was looking for his views on Freemasonry and couldn’t find any, though I feel that Freemasonry and Catholicism are key concerns today. I’m concerned by the large numbers of Freemasons in the Southern Baptists and do not view the USA churches as the leading Christians of the past whom we so often think used to be there.

  2. From time to time I stumble onto things from your organization that remind me how sad much of what you produce makes me…and I grow increasingly convinced God-the-Father is immeasurably saddened by much of it, too.
