Dear Lighthouse Trails:
Many thanks for your fearless proclamation of biblical truth and publication of information regarding the negative aspects and errors of the Emerging Church. I have been made aware of real problems through your research and I would encourage you to continue in this.
However, in spite of my support for your exposure of this growing problem I believe there is an “elephant in the room”; an underlying cause for the Church’s abandonment of biblical truth with its headlong rush for fulfillment in other directions such as meditation, charismatic experiences, symbolism, rituals etc.
We need to ask “Why has the Evangelical Church in our generation lost confidence in the Bible as the final authority in matters of doctrine, morals, conduct and source of spiritual food?” Is there a principal reason for this flight away from God’s word – an ignored elephant in the room? I believe there is an elephant and that elephant is Darwinian evolution.
The teaching of Darwinism in schools and colleges, along with constant media references to vast ages and evolutionary explanations in almost every TV natural history programme (in the U.K.) has produced an ingrained anti-biblical world view among “educated” people, including Christians. A wall-to-wall barrage of evolution propaganda has produced a mind-set that automatically engenders doubt, critical questioning and loss of confidence in O. T. history and rejection of any N.T. teaching that conflicts with “modern” ethics. If this elephant goes unchallenged Christians will never again enjoy the confidence in God’s word their forebears once did.
The assumption of “deep time” (both past and future) together with theistic evolution leads Christians to hold a view of God no better than a “back seat” driver in His own creation – a god with a remote, “hands off” role. This is not the almighty, Creator God of the Bible. This diminished view of God undermines the key doctrines of divine sovereignty and biblical authority and so there is no longer any absolute standards. The crucial, relevant point of this is that the Bible is the only way to judge the truth about God and “religious” experience. When Christians no longer refer to the Bible as final authority then they will turn to other, extra-biblical authorities for their truth and other experiences for their sense of God.
I understand the need to warn of the immediate challenge but we need also to address the elephant in the room, the cause of disruption in our Christian home and so I would encourage you to focus more on the elephant, not just on the disruption it causes.
Yours in His name, B.C.
Our Comments:
Dear B.C.
Well said. And we couldn’t agree with you more. This is why on our categories list on our site, we list as one: creation/evolution. Our author and colleague Roger Oakland discusses this in his Emerging Church DVD series (in DVD 1). As a former evolutionist, he came to see, after learning about the emerging church, that what was at the core was an evolutionary spirituality – basically what you have described above. Here is one article on our site that covered this that you might find interesting (see others below): http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=4406
Thank you for sharing what you did B_____. A very good reminder.

P.S. Warren Smith, in his book A “Wonderful” Deception also discusses quantum spirituality and the evolutionary “marriage” between science and faith.
